A few days ago, we noted that some plug-ins and add-ons may be incompatible with the newly released Safari 5.0, causing crashes. We also noted that uninstalling APE may resolve some Safari 5.0 crash/performance issues.
Apple has now echoed this advice in a knowledge base article entitled “Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues.”
The article recommends using the add-ons’ uninstallers if possible, or manually removing add-ons from the same locations we noted in our previous article, and a few others:
- /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
- /Library/Input Methods/
- /Library/InputManagers/
- /Library/ScriptingAdditions
- ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
- ~/Library/Input Methods/
- ~/Library/InputManagers/
- ~/Library/ScriptingAdditions

Okay, this is all well and good, except I cannot find a list anywhere that says exactly which add-ons are supported and which are not. How do I know what add-ons to get rid of?
I am on a PowerBook G4, with OS X 10.4.11 installed. My understanding is that I will be unable to install Leopard because Mac broke away from the PowerBook around the time Leopard came out. So now my computer is apparently trying to update Safari 4 using the updates that are available to Safari 5 users. That’s the only explanation I can think of for why my browsers crash repeatedly. This goes for Firefox as well, and out of desperation I installed Camino, which works fine except that I cannot download/upload ANYTHING.
HELP? Anyone?

Obviously all these crashes have left me completely flustered, because I gave the wrong information on the type of Mac I am using in my previous comments:
Here are the specs:
iBook G4 PowerPC
Mac OS X
Version 10.4.11 (Tiger)
Safari 4
Crashes started happening randomly and frequently at the rate of 4-5 times per hour, about two weeks ago. The only thing I can think of that happened around that time was that I might have updated my software then. Then a couple of days ago I discovered that my home page had been changed overnight, after I forgot to shut my computer down before bed. I do not know computer jargon, so please don’t start rattling off computer phraseology at me. I just want to know what add-on’s I should remove so I can have my computer back.
Thank you!
