Uninstalling APE May Resolve Some Safari 5.0 Crash/Performance Issues

June 11, 2010

Mac

Users continue to experience seemingly random crashes under the newly released Safari 5.0.

In culling a few readers’ crash reports, it appears that APE (Application Enhancer) add-ons may be to blame for at least a portion of the crashes. As such, you may need to temporarily uninstall the APE system completely. Here are the instructions for doing so, from the Unsanity website:

“Prior to version 2.0:

Click on APE Manager or Application Enhancer in System Preferences. Choose the Uninstall option under the Information tab.

Version 2.0 and newer:

Click on Application Enhancer in System Preferences. Click the “Troubleshooting…” button in the About tab. Click the “Uninstall Application Enhancer…” button and follow the instructions.

OR

Download the Application Enhancer installer from unsanity.com/haxies/ape run it and click uninstall.

APE destabilizes the Mac. Use it at your own risk, and don’t gripe to anyone but Unsanity when it breaks your apps.

Huh? InputManagers and Input Methods have nothing whatsoever to do with APE.

Everyone pounces on APE and Unsanities haxies whenever random crashing of anything occurs without any evidence. I have used APE and multiple haxies (Windowshade, FruitMenu, Labels and recently Xounds) from the day they were available for OS X. In earlier versions of OS X (and OS 7-9) some caused instability, but since Leopard, I have never had a problem with APE or any of these haxies used together and I have disabled them to try to solve a problem. I have not had a Safari 5 crash, so cannot test. I’m using 64-bit SL.

These crashes are much more likely to be caused by bad caches, prefs or fonts.

Using the latest version of APE with no problems. Love WindowShadeX which requires it. If Apple would return windowing to the behavior of windows as they had back in OS 9.x, I’d drop both APE and WindowShadeX, but until they do I’ll continue to use them, thank you.

I am with Don on this one. I have APE installed on SNL and no issues what so ever. And this is on two systems. 2008 MP and a 2.66Ghz Mac mini. I had one FLASH crash of Safari 5. Installed Click to Flash and no more crashes.

I do love roll up windows. WindowShadeX provides this. Do not have to go to the Dock to get those windows back. Truly a time saver when you have 23 inch and 30 inch screens.

Why not just use time machine to revert to safari 4 then wait for apple to fix the problem? Simple!

Safari (latest) v4 crashes a lot with FlashPlayer 10.1.53.64 !!! No doubt about it.

I only updated and installed it yesterday for one reason: Get rid of the annoying update notice.

Before this update i had almost no trouble with it. All those crashes occur after the update.

I will go back to the older one… if its not a big problem or until the newer version is crucial and required for something important… ;-) btw, is flash crucial o rimportant for anything ;-)
