iPhoto ’11 (9.1): Slow Scrolling or Freezes/Hangs; Fixes

November 8, 2010

Mac

Several uses have reported slow scrolling and other performance issues in iPhoto ’11, along with an issue in which the application briefly or indefinitely stalls.

Potential fixes

Delete cache. Try deleting the following folder com.apple.iPhoto from:

  • /Users/(yourusername)/Library/Caches/

Rebuilt iPhoto library. Hold down the Option and Command keys while you launch iPhoto and select all options except for “Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from Automatic Backup”

Switch thumbnail size. Press the “3″ key to switch to medium sizes for thumbnails. This can increase scrolling smoothness and speed.

Increase RAM. Albeit a less-than-ideal fix for this specific issue, several users have reported dramatically improved performance from iPhoto ’11 after adding more RAM.

Downgrade to iPhoto ’09 (8.0). Failing all else, you can downgrade to iPhoto ’09.

I can confirm slightly higher ram usage of iPhoto ’11 than the previous 2 versions.

with my 60 or so GB iPhoto library (including video) iPhoto uses over 800 MB of ram on average.

with other smaller libraries I’ve worked with on client computers (10 or so GB) it is only using 200-400 MB on average.

So far I have not seen performance issues, but these are great tips.

Even with 9.1.1 iPhoto is terrible slow compared with
iPhoto ´08. The editing feature is unusable. Still waiting for a
fix, or this will never come ?
