Pinger text free unlimited with voice is a wonderful little app that does everything that the native iPhone and sms apps do over wifi for iPhone or iPod touch. This app allows you to make free calls and send free text and picture messaging. This is perfect for ipod touch users who want their ipod to function more like the iPhone, or if you do have the iphone it is still useful for those who are running out of minutes or texts on their At&t or Verizon plan. This app also allows you to have multiple numbers on one phone or iPod. They give you an actual 11 digit phone number that people with any type of phone from any carrier, or land line can call.
Step 1: Download Textfree with Voice
Go to the itunes app store and download the app, search pinger, inc. Select the one called “Textfree with Voice”. It is a free app. (Pinger also has another app that is strictly for texts.) Download as you would any other app, and open the app.
Step 2: Register Your Account
Fill in the information they ask for, a username, password, and your email address (They seldom email you other than for password changes and to confirm your email.)
Step 3: Give your zip code.
For this step they ask you to enter a zip code. You could give your home address and get a number that corresponds to where you live. However, you could give a zip code for anywhere (In the United States) and get a number that will be from the zip code you give. This is a good feature for those who want to have a free number from multiple cities to make calls with. (Note: you can only be logged into one account at a time and therefore can only have one number active at a time to receive calls and messages)
Step 4: Choose a number
Just select one of the available numbers.
Step 5: Facebook Connect
Pinger allows you to make a post to your Facebook wall giving everyone your new number.
Step 6: Sending your first text
In the top right conner there is a compose button. Click this button. This takes you to their integrated contact list that is connected to your phones contacts. You can either select one of those numbers or enter one on the dial pad (access to that is the button in the top right.) Now you can write your text as you would in the native app.
To refresh your screen to see if you have received any new texts pull down the screen until you see an arrow. The screen will refresh.
Step 7: Getting minutes to make calls.
To get free minutes to make calls you need to download apps that they suggest. Click the button that looks like a screwdriver, and select remaining minutes (which will be zero when you first get the app.) Then select earn free minutes, select one of the apps that they suggest. For this to be entirely free select one of the free apps, clicking one of the apps will take you to the app store where you are to install the app. Once it is installed, open the app and play around with it a bit. Within a minute or so a message should pop up on the screen telling you that you have received your free minutes. You can then navigate away from the downloaded app and even delete it if you want. (note sometimes this feature of the pinger app is slow or doesn’t work properly. If you have trouble, try downloading another one of the free ones. I have never had to much trouble with it.)
You can also buy minutes using the payment method you use for your iTunes account—100 minutes for $1.99, 250 minutes for $4.99, and 500 minutes for $9.99.
Step 8: Make a call
Its as simple as sending a text. Select a contact or enter a number for who you want to call and make the call with your free minutes.
Other features on this app include custom themes for your text conversations, your recent calls list, and various text tones and ringtones.
A note for incoming calls. If you use the auto-lock feature of your ipod sometimes incoming calls get disconnected as you are entering your passcode. This is a nuisance that the developers are working on.
