With iOS 10, Safari comes with some new and interesting features such as the ability to open multiple Safari web pages on your idevice. During the iOS 10 beta testing, we found that Safari was unusually slow on the iPhone at times. This has been fixed for the most part now, but if you are still experiencing a Safari that is slow or crashing on you, please follow the tips below.
Safari Crashing on iOS 10, Tips
This problem was first noticed in the iOS 9.3 versions. The App would suddenly freeze or exit out.
Try each of the steps till the problem is resolved:
Step – 1 Try switching your Safari to run in the private browsing mode.
In order to switch on to the private browsing mode on your iPhone or iPad,
Step – 2 Disable the Safari Suggestions and Search Engine Suggestions Setting on Safari. This has been a pro-forma tip since Safari started crashing on iOS.
In order to do this,
- 1.Tap on Settings
- 2.Next, Tap on Safari
- 3.Disable Safari Suggestions and Search Engine Suggestions
Step – 3 Clear your website Data. In order to do this,
- Tap on Settings > Safari
- Scroll down and locate “Clear History and Website Data”
- Tap and confirm your action by pressing “Clear”
- Tap on Website Data, scroll down to the bottom and choose “Remove all website data”.
Step – 4 Try to reset your idevice by holding the Sleep/wake button and the Home button together for 15 seconds or so till you see the Apple Logo. Let the device start on its own and try to use Safari.
Safari Slow after iOS 10 Update. 10 Tips to Consider
If your Safari experience proves to be slower than what you were used to in iOS 9, try the following tips to make it more responsive. This is particularly helpful if you are using an older iPhone or iPad with iOS 10
Tip – 1 Clear the website data for Safari as explained in Step – 3 above.
Tip – 2 Tap on Settings > Privacy > Location Services. If your location services setting is ON, scroll down and locate Safari Websites on the list of apps and switch it to “Never”.
Tip – 3 We have always heard it as a sure proof way to may the iDevice faster. This is your Background Refresh Setting. Tap on Settings > Background App Refresh and switch it to OFF. This should indirectly help your Safari’s performance.
Tip – 4 Tap on Settings > Safari and make sure that your have the “Open New Tabs in Background” to ON
Tip – 5 If you are currently not using Apple Pay via Safari, you may want to disable it in the setting so that websites cannot check your profile and take time processing this check. This is new in iOS 10. In order to disable this, tap on Settings > Safari > and scroll down to the Privacy and Security section. Switch OFF the “Check for Apple Pay” here.
Tip – 6 Preloading top hits for searches was started with iOS 7. You can choose to disable this feature to save bandwidth and stop Safari from pre-loading if you don’t find the feature helpful. We have also found that turning off Spotlight features can sometimes help in speeding up your Safari experience. You can disable Safari by tapping on Settings > General > Spotlight Search. Scroll down and switch off the Safari App under the section Search Results. Next, Tap on Settings > Safari and under the Search section, switch off Safari Suggestions
Tip – 7 As we work in Safari, we accumulate multiple tabs and forget to close the sessions or hardly ever force quit the app. Simply click on the tab button and close all the Safari tabs that you are not using. You can also double click your home button real fast and scroll through the apps that are live on your idevice. Quit the apps that you are not using by swipping up the screen.
Tip – 8 Ahh those old offline reading lists that have accumulated on your idevice for years. Clean them out by tapping on Settings > Storage & iCloud Usage > Storage > Manage Storage > and tap on Safari. Next tap on edit at the right hand corner and delete the offline reading list if you are not using it. This will also free up space on your iDevice.
Tip – 9 Long press the Tabs button on Safari and you should be able to delete all the open tabs in the app. Sometimes closing all the opened tabs or force quitting the app and then relaunching it can improve the speed of Safari
Tip – 10 Going by history, some of the most stubborn Safari problems can be tackled by resetting all settings completely on your device followed by a restore from the backup.
