Last Updated on September 23, 2016 by SK

Apple has now made their iOS 10 available for public use. With the initial launch of any iOS, there are always a few problems that are to be expected. We have experienced this when iOS 9.3 was released. This is particularly the case when you are using an older idevice. In this article, we will provide you with resources to deal with the top 10 problems with iOS 10.

As of this morning, many users are reporting problems with the iOS 10. This is particularly the case for iPads. Please try to use iTunes to update your iPad instead of the OTA and remember to backup your device before you install iOS 10. Some users reported that the update is putting the phone into recovery mode, forcing them to go back to wipe the memory, re-install 9.3.5 and then try upgrading again.

Common Suggestions to iOS 10 Problems

One of the most common denominators with troubleshooting majority of iPhone and iPad problems following an iOS update is trying to use the hard reset. Simple press the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button together for about 20 seconds or so till you see the Apple Logo show up on your device screen. Release the buttons and let the device start on its own. Try the functionality out after the device has restarted.

With functions that affect iCloud or iTunes or App store features, try logging out of your iCloud / iTunes account and logging back in. This simple sign out and signing in back can often help with common problems.

Please note that some of the new iOS 10 features such as the “Faces” feature, loosely based on some artificial intelligence can consume massive amounts of drive space. Once you update to iOS 10, you may want to monitor your icloud drive space and upgrade to a higher quota. This is particularly important if you plan on using macOS Sierra and iOS integration features such as sharing the MacOS home screen with your iPhone and iPad. Upgrading your icloud drive will solve a lot of problems down the road.

Certain features in iOS 10 are also device specific. When you check the iOS 10 device compatibility, your device may be eligible for an update but that does not mean that all iOS 10 features will work on it. “Raise to wake” feature will be exclusive to the iPhone 7/7+, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S+, and the iPhone SE.

We hope that you found the coverage on the issues helpful. If you did rather downgrade to iOS 9.3.5 and wait for a newer update of iOS 10, please read here how to downgrade to iOS 9 from iOS 10.

Please let us know below if you have any additional tips to share with the readers. We would also like to hear your comments on how your experience has been with iOS 10. In general, we expect the new iOS 10 to be more robust than the prior iOS releases but we look forward to your comments.

Hey Chris, Back up your device to iCloud. Tap on Settings > iCloud > Notes ; Toggle this to OFF , Confirm when you see the message that this will delete all the notes on your iPhone, then wait a few seconds and turn the Notes in iCloud back to ON. Your device may take a little while to re-download all the notes from iCloud and it should fix your issue. This usually happens when one of the notes on the device has been corrupted.

After upgraded my iPhone 6 to IOS 10, it kept ask me to enter password when I opened my Live email account. After I entered password, it said the account can’t be accessed because my parents have set some kinds of restriction which I didn’t set. Then I deleted the account and added a new account but the same message came up and said the account can’t be verified. I can only add the account choosing “other” instead of “outlook”. However, only two choices, mail & note, for me to pick. There are no calendar and others and I can’t sync the emails for a certain period.

After upgrading to iOS 10 on my iPhone 6 Plus, the e-mail icons (such as Exchange, Gmail etc.) have gone. It only shows the inboxes on the top and then the greyish color with Exchange, Gmail written in plain format. However, if you try adding a new mailbox it shows the Exchange, Gmail icons. Is there a way to fix this? Many thanks in anticipation.

Bill, Tap on Edit at the right hand top corner. This will let you choose the emails that you want to remove.Once you select them, you can tap on “Move” and put them into your junk folder. Instead of choosing one email at a time, you can also tap on Filter icon on the bottom left corner > next tap on Filtered By > and choose the filters. Tap on Done. This will filter the emails based on your criteria and then you mark all and delete. Try it out. Thanks for pointing it out and we will feature a post to take better control of the new iOS Mail. The guidance from Apple is as follows:

      – Delete multiple messages at once. While viewing a list of messages, tap Edit, select some messages, then tap Trash. If you change your mind, shake iPhone immediately to undo.
Stash your trash – You can set how long deleted messages stay in the Trash mailbox. Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts > [account name] > Advanced > Remove. Some email services might override your selection; for example, iCloud doesn’t keep deleted messages longer than 30 days, even if you select Never.”

I hate to say this but you may have to restore your phone to recover the device passcode and then change your settings for the passcode to the way you like. Staci, Sorry to hear that you are having issues. Have you checked your Restrictions? Tap on Settings > General > Restrictions. Check to make sure that you have the restrictions to delete app set properly. The other thing that you can try if you have a 3D Touch enabled iPhone is to disable your 3D Touch and give it a try. Sometimes the pressure sensitivities around 3D Touch can cause issues while trying to delete an app. To access 3D Touch settings, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > scroll down to 3D Touch.

      Good luck.

A few days after the update my ear speaker stop working only the speakerphone would work when placing a call or answering a call, very annoying as soon as I was able to analyze this I went home to restore it to the last back up. Strangely every time I tried (twice) to restore it back two months, the phone turned back on and said press home button for update so it forces you to go to 10.1 you cannot go back to before 10. This is OK because that’s why I have an Apple iPhone iPad Mac etc. why would you ever want to go back? Muscle through it, stay calm and trust Apple to fix their updates RIP SJ

So I have an iPhone 5s with iOS 10. Just today, my iMessage started crashing. Just about as soon as I click on iMessage, it exits out and goes back to the homescreen. I held down my home button and sleep wake button to reset it a few times. That didn’t do anything. I took my SIM card out. Nothing. I went to my settings and reset all settings, nothing. Also someone said they changed the text size to fix it, and other people said it worked but it will not work. I just need iMessage to stay open. Help!!! 🙁

The memories feature in the photo app has been stuck at the same location for scanning for days and days. I’ve made sure to plug in the iPhone 6s and had it locked. Any suggestion on how to restart this process? I “only” have 16k of photos. The faces feature is also moving slowly, but at least it’s proceeding (48 hours = 5k of 16k scanned). Thanks!

@Staci – Possibly FB was updating and didn’t complete properly. I haven’t had that with iOS10, but I did experience it in iOS9 with another app. I rebooted (holding down the Home button and the power switch to force it through the full restart with the Apple logo), then immediately opened the App Store and was able to remove the app then reinstall it. (When I’d earlier touched the app after a reboot before going into App Store, I wasn’t able to remove/reinstall) Hope you have better luck than you have had so far. (You can always switch to Google+, that’s almost the same as FB, right?)

I have discovered that, sometimes, if I make a phone call, when I am finished, instead of seeing the black phone screen, I am facing the lock screen with no way to end the phone call. This has happened at least five times. Is there a work-around for this?

Hi JP, Haven’t seen this one yet or received any feedback on it. Just curious, have you tried the usual Resets? Hard Reset by pressing the Home and Wake/Sleep button together till the Apple logo shows up. If that doesn’t work, backup your iPhone into icloud and then try the Settings > General > Reset > Reset All. ( Please be mindful that Reset All Settings will reset the iPhone like new. Apps will still be there but the settings will be gone and you will need to set up your wi-fi etc again). P.S- WE Have not tested it. Usually for most persistent problems the Reset All Settings can do the trick before one decides to Restore the device.

Cindy, First, You ca do a hard reset ( press the home and sleep/wake button together for 15 seconds or so till you see the Apple Logo show up) and see if that helps. If it does not help just with the reset,
Tap on Settings > Contacts > Accounts > iCloud > Scroll down here and if your Contacts is ON. Toggle it to OFF. select “Keep on My iPhone” It will then turn off contacts. Now, turn contacts back on, select “Merge” It will then turn contacts back on and you should now have all your contact names restored on your iPhone 6. This takes a little time but the contact names should show up. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Noticed a strange issue with iOS 10 last night.

I upgraded my work provided iPhone 6s to iOS 10 on the day it released with no issues (Tuesday, Sept. 13). After the upgrade, I restarted the phone before using it – I’ve noticed that this seems to help immensely with any initial flakiness updates have.

Everything appeared to be working fine. I’ve taken a handful of pictures since updating, played games, used the alarm in the morning, used Facebook, Gmail, Chrome, Good for Enterprise, etc.

This week on Tuesday (Sept. 20), a co-worker was having issues with their camera on their iPhone and asked me to Facetime them to test something. I’ve never really used Facetime before. But I understand how to do it, so I pulled her up in my contacts, clicked Facetime, and it came up fine, it proved that her camera was indeed not working, mine was fine and I disconnected the Facetime chat/call/whatever it is.

Now we get to last night. I went to use my phone to take a picture of something. Pulled up the camera app. All I get is a black image. I tried switching to other 3rd party camera apps – they pull can seem to use the camera just fine, but the image taken won’t save to the phone. I switch back to the Apple Camera app – still just black. I try switching between the front and back cameras, it’s black either way. I switch between the video to slo-mo to square, etc. All just black. I pull up the effects – it shows the what I’m trying to take a picture of with the various effects but I can’t click on any of the effects to choose them. I can only click out of effects and go back to the just black camera viewer.

I was able to “fix it” by turning the iPhone off and back on, but I’m not sure I’d call that a fix. I guess I should be glad I never use Facetime generally so I’ll probably never run into this problem again?

Laura, That’s got to be annoying. Several people are reporting this. You are not alone. We tested it with an iPhone 5C and no issues. No issues noted on iPad or iPhone 7 either. May I suggest one last fix since you have already tried the reset. Delete all alarms. Next, Tap on Settings > General > Date & Time. Toggle OFF the “Set Automatically”. Switch your iphone off and then after turning it on, Toggle the Set Automatically to ON . Set up a New alarm and give it a try. If this does not work for you, probably the only option is to restore and set up your iPhone as New. Good luck! We will update the post if we find any breakthroughs.

Is it me, or has that convenient function disappeared, of selecting any word to look it up in available offline dictionaries. It seems iOS 10 has eliminated it?? I find no other function in that sequence that does the same.

It no longer works for me in various books or online articles I’ve tried it with. I have several dictionaries for different languages on my iPhone 6+ and iPad mini 4. Before iOS 10,, selecting a word, then selecting “Define” would go directly to that word and its definitions in a dictionary, according to the language. Is there a setting to restore that handy function?

I don’t have cable so I have been using airplay to stream network tv shows with my iPad. With iOS 10 there is no longer the ability to airplay without mirroring. I have discovered that it will work if I click the fullscreen button on my iPad; however, every time a commercial comes along it goes out of airplay. Then I have to get airplay going again after the commercial – and sometimes can’t. (It has become a royal pain to watch a tv show) My wife’s iPad hasn’t been updated and it still works great; so it isn’t something the network has done.

I select it, but the issue I see is there is no way to edit/or delete the contact after searching for it in this manner. Would have to go to the contacts or phone icon to edit or delete a contact. Seems there should be an option for edit/delete when searching from the home screen. Is this a bug or by design ? Thanks.

Since upgrading to ios 10 my iphone 6s Airplay feature cannot see our Airport Express system that is connected to our home surround sound, which is the main way of playing music in our house. It can find the Apple TV in another room with no problem. The Airport Express is running SW version 7.3.7. Airplay via the Airport Express still works fine for other family members. Help?

Ever since the upgrade my notes that have dates in the note are no longer highlighted as they were before. Even tracking numbers no longer work when i click on them.

Wondering if others are having an issue within notes, prior to upgrade dates in the future ex. 11/11/2016 would be highlighted now they are not. Also package tracking numbers were highlighted and when you click on it, you would be prompted to track package now it’s not highlighted and does nothing when clicking on tracking number.

In email, after using the search function, I’m unable to mark emails for deletion! So I search for “John” and tap edit so I can select the emails to be trashed, but…. nothing happens. I hit edit, tap the email I want to trash and it won’t select. I’ve restarted the phone an the email app in a number of different combinations, and it still doesn’t work.
    HAAAAALP! Please?

After updating to iOS 10.0.2, I no longer have the torch function on my phone. Previously on lock screen or even unlocked, I could swipe up from the bottom of the screen and see the torch icon, clock, camera, calculator. I could access the bluetooth, do not disturb, screen rotation, brightness etc functions. Now when I swipe up on locked or unlocked screen, all I get is some play music function. How do I get back to the previously (& regularly used) functions? This is the worst update yet. Apple is going downhill and I will be moving to a different brand when all my contracts are up.

HA! Never mind, I found it. It wasn’t there yesterday. Now it’s swipe up, then swipe right for all the other functions I’ve been needing. Why?

I have 2 problems with this update that I don’t think are bugs but just changed features.
1: I can now only email 5 images from my camera roll, which is very inconvenient to me. With iOS 9 i was able to but now I can’t.
2: IOS 10 also took away the save image option on the web when on websites and such, and the only way is to screenshot and then crop, and the screenshot doesn’t always get the whole picture.
Thank you for your time, 🙂

What happened to the screen when you end a call???? All I get is this little circle on the upper right hand corner, I have to touch that in order to get the screen to open and then touch that red circle at the bottom of the screen to end the call. That was already conveniently there when you took the phone away from your face to end the call before the big update, and I have a iPhone 6 Plus. Now there is too many prompts to do, just to end a call….ARE YOU KIDDING ME APPLE?!!!!! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!!!!!

In reply to Nitz question. If you want the 4 digit code back on the lock screen, there is an options link on the bottom of the screen when you change your passcode. There you can choose 4 digit passcode.

In response to Eva question. I read that you can push the sleep/power button to end a call when the screen locks. I didn’t get to test it yet. I find it frustrating too when I need to hang up the phone after my screen locks.

1-Beyond annoyed sign-on screen is now dull gray w/very little contrast. If you didn’t need glasses before, you might now. (settings do not fix) 2-Pushing the home button merely to sign on, will wear out your i-phone much faster. 3-New bubble popping noise for keystrokes-Really? Why not give owners/users an option. 4-Battery=gone. 5. Time to upgrade & may be changing brands.

Before I updated my phone I didn’t have a password to access my phone…once I updated it it requires my thumb print and if I don’t use the thumb print it requires a password..I have no clue what my old password was before I deactivated the thumb print and password…my thumb print works fine but I would like to remove it. What do I do?

Hi, is there no longer a ‘delete all’ function for junk email folder? I can do this in normal inbox and in trash but not junk? Have to select each message then select delete? Which takes a while when you are getting loads of junk emails!

Bad upgrade. Auto upgrade last night has messed me up. I have lost productivity and very frusterated with the slowness and changes that were a surprise. Last apple product for me. You guys are terrible. The home screen changes suck, I don’t even need to add the passcode MOST of the time! Less secure, WOW and slow, And to try to restore back to the old OS is a nightmare. Apple let me me down, big time.

Clock turned to black background. How do I change this back? Also log-in screen has distorted color – a fades stripe between the 123 and 789 lines and a tinge of green around the circle around the zero. This distortion appears nowhere else in the phone. Also when I swipe to login I get Up Next, Siri App suggestions, News — how do I turn this off? I just want to log in not waste my time!

I would rather not look at my widgets every single time I unlock my phone. This is the most annoying thing ever. I want to go to the home screen. Why the hell would I want to look at a widget 80x a day?!!!

Even if I remove the widgets, I still have to look at a blank screen with a search bar at the top. Just delete this whole stupid friggin thing. I am unbelievable frustrated that now I have to do so much work just to get into my phone. Considering how many times I do this during the day, this is excessive. Really, who’s idea was this?!?!? And who approved this feature. Fire them both.

My next phone will not be an Apple. Ive been loyal for years but seriously, The battery life, the excessive price, the shitty overpriced fixed memory options. If you want people to pay high prices for these products then how about you give the people features that make the phone better not worse than the competition.

Also pretty tired of these updates that take the last of my scarce memory (because I didnt want to pay $600 for a tiny bit more memory), and of the updates basically destroying any older version phones. I am sitting on a mint 4S I can’t sell because of how much the last two OS updates destroyed the phone’s performance. Unbelievably ridiculous. Terrible business ethics.

Since updating on iPad, new bottom suggestive row a nightmare on Twitter, it prevents you from seeing/sing DM features and can’t see what currently typing in DM when using iPad in landscape mode. HORRIBLE. The ‘removal arrow’ only removes for that character and pops right back up with next character typed!

Hi, Since upgrading to iOS 10, the unlock using the thumb/finger print is no longer available and the phone unlocks automatically by pressing the home button. I have tried deleting finger prints and installing new ones but they are not being accepted. I have wiped the button to make sure it is free of debris. I have also tried turning the phone off and back on. Is this something that others are faced with? How can it be corrected. Your prompt response will be greatly appreciated as I do not want my phone easily accessible to others. Thanks in advance for your assistance.
