We previously reported on an issue in which users sers have reported weak Wi-Fi signals and/or inordinately slow transfer speeds. In these cases, users report fast connection and throughput from Macs, PCs and other devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network, but significantly degraded speeds and/or fluctuating signal strength on the iPad or iPhone.
In some cases, this slowness may be caused by the AT&T MicroCell, which is designed to boost 3G download speeds at specific locations.
Move MicroCell away from wireless router. Many users may be able to resolve this issue by simply moving the MicroCell unit further away from the wireless router (or AirPort base station). Doing so may dramatically lessen or altogether eliminate interference and restore normal speed.
Change wireless channels. Follow these steps for most wireless routers:
- Login to your router’s configuration page by opening a browser window and entering the address 192.168.1.1 (you may need to enter the username: admin and password: password1)
- Change the channel from automatic to 6 or another channel
For AirPort base stations, this setting can be changed using the AirPort Utility. In AirPort Utility, navigate to Manual Update > Wireless and change the channel.
