iMovie: iOS Movie Making for Everyone

By SK 0 comments Last updated November 17, 2011

Today, we carry our lives in our pocket, in our phones. The videos of that great night at the bar, the baby shower last week, and the indie film you and your friends are making; we need a way to edit these videos, making them perfect and presentable. With iMovie for iOS, we can do just that.

Design:

iMovie recently got a big update from Apple, completely revamping the app with a sleek, new user interface. When you first open the app, you realize how greatly designed this app really is. The whole interface screams cinema, and that’s what you’re there for, to create and watch movies! When you first start up the app, your main screen will look like this, an abandoned theatre waiting for new and exciting movies to appear. Hopefully, that theatre will fill up soon. And that leads us to…

Interface and Ease of Use:

After leaving the theatre entrance, you enter a completely new experience. This was somewhat jarring at first, but soon you get used to this “all business” interface. The movie editing interface has six buttons (from top left to right, then from bottom left to right):

0.Back to main menu.

1.Record audio/narration.

2.Video settings.

3.Select media (Video, Photos, Music).

4.Play.

5.Record video/ take picture.

The movie making interface is very easy to use, once you get used to the space. It took me a while to get used to everything, but after a few minutes, I was editing like a pro. And that’s the idea! An interface so simple it feels like your a pro, and you really feel like one.

Editing Videos:

The act of editing your videos is great, you never thought you’d be able to use video editing software as powerful as this on a smartphone.

Within the app comes several themes that allow you to design a movie with theme music and special translations. The themes included in the app are very professional and fun at the same time.

Editing actual videos was fast and delightful, although there was a bit of slowness the longer the movie becomes. But that’s to be expected with a 3.5″ device editing more than a 5 minute movie. Any longer than that, and you’ll need a computer; which is fine, because this app was definitely made for light video editing.

Sharing Movies:

When you finish your movie, there are numerous ways to get the movie off your device. You can send the movie to:

6.iTunes.

7.CNN iReport

8.Vimeo

9.Facebook

10.Youtube

11. Or store it in your device for later.

Conclusion:

Overall, iMovie is a lovely experience. It’s a powerful, yet lightweight video editing solution for Apple devices. I would definitely recommend the app to anyone looking for a way to edit their memories on the go; and at $5, you can’t go wrong.
