iOS 6 introduced more than 200 new features. Although this iOS update has been smooth and trouble-free for most users, some users have been reporting various issues with their devices (iPad, iPod or iPhone) after the update. New iPhone 5 users (which have iOS 6 installed) are also reporting similar problems. Some of the most reported issues are:
- Wi-Fi / Internet connection related problems
- Battery drain issues
- Weakness of new built in Apple Map
- Passbook not working properly
- Bluetooth issues
- iOS 6 crash or freeze
- Third party Apps problems
- iOS email problems
This article does not pin point each problem, instead it offers general troubleshooting tips likely to fix most of your iOS 6 related problems:
- Restart your device by pressing the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds and then slide the slider. This may fix your issues.
- If you are having battery problems, calibrate your device’s battery by letting it down to 0% before recharging again to 100%.
- If you are having Wi-Fi related problems: Reset Network Settings > Tap on “Settings” > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will reset all your network settings to the factory defaults.
- Reset your device if your device is unresponsive or very slow. To hard reset your device, simply press the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo (ignore the slider).
- Are some apps to blame? You may have some apps causing problems (e.g. depleting your battery very quickly). Try to identify what/if apps are causing your issue. To do this, shut down your apps completely (by double pressing the home button, a task bar will appear; tap and hold your finder on one of the app icons and then tap the minus sign) one by one to see if your issue persists. There is also an app called Carat (iTunes link) that will report apps that are using lots of battery power.
- If you are still having problems, tap Settings > General > Reset, and choose “Reset All Settings”. This will NOT delete your apps, media files or data but it will delete your settings and preferences.
- If you are still having problems, try “Erase All Content and Settings” by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. This will delete all information from your iPad, iPhone of iPod. This process may take from a few minutes to a few hours so make sure that your device have enough battery or just plug it into an outlet. Also make sure that you’ve backed up your device before doing this.
- If you are still having problems, you may try restoring your device using iTunes. This will restore everything to factory settings. Again, back up your device first. Connect your device to your computer, and then click restore in iTunes.
- About the Apple Map app – there is nothing for you to fix. Apple will improve this with future iOS releases. If you want to use Google map, then you can use it via your web browser (e.g. Safari).
- About YouTube app – after the update, you will realize that the built in YouTube app is gone. However, you can download and install the YouTube app from the App Store (iTunes link), OR you can use YouTube via your browser as well (it will work, you do not need Flash).
