Along with today’s release of macOS Monterey Beta 5, watchOS 8 Beta 5 is also now available for developers to download. This comes a day after the iOS and iPadOS 15 Beta 5 was released. And like the latest macOS Monterey beta, there’s really not much going on in Beta 5.
What’s New In watchOS 8 Developer Beta 5?
watchOS 8 Beta 5 is still rolling out to users everywhere, so we haven’t had the time to dive in and find all of the changes. From the outside, it seems that there really isn’t much to write home about with this release. The most notable change that we can find so far is a new icon for the Weather app. This is also one of the “biggest” changes found in the latest iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 Beta release.
If you are already on the Developer Beta channel, the update should be arriving for you within the next few hours. With it, you’ll find a build number of 19R5323g. Those on the Public Beta channel, will have to wait another day or two until watchOS Beta 5 arrives.
Should You Download watchOS 8?
When you start getting up to beta 5 and beyond, that’s usually when we feel comfortable enough to recommend installing the beta. However, if you read through Apple’s Release Notes, you might find a couple of frustrating bugs that are still present. Here are the two that stand out to us:
- Your watch might repeatedly disconnect unexpectedly from your phone. (80733338)
- Workaround: Restart your phone.
- You’re unable to switch to a Focus other than Do Not Disturb using Siri. (78263540)
- Apps installed only on your watch aren’t available in the Focus settings allow list. (76064919)
- The Watch app might crash when pairing through the camera. (80804790)
- Workaround: Pair the Watch using the “Pair Manually” button.
Having your Apple Watch consistently disconnect from your phone is something that isn’t great for anyone. But the bigger reason why we don’t recommend installing the watchOS 8 Beta is due to the fact that you can’t “roll back” to watchOS 7. Well, you technically can, but you have to take your Apple Watch to your local Apple Store. For some, that may not be much of an issue, but for others that don’t have a “local” Apple Store, it’s just not viable.
- What’s New In watchOS 8?
So for now, we would recommend just hanging tight with watchOS 7 while you can. We’re expecting Apple to release watchOS 8 in the next month or so with a final version. And we’ll be sure to let you know when it’s finally available.
