If you were wondering what Mark Gurman would “leak” or share this week, the wait is over. In the latest Power On newsletter (via Bloomberg), Gurman shared that the upcoming Appl event is going to be jam-packed. Not only are we going to see new iPhone models, but Apple is set to show off the AirPods 3, Apple Watch Series 7, and even the iPad Mini 6.
Starting off with the iPhone 13, Gurman states that despite this being an “S” year for the iPhone, Apple has decided to for “13” instead. Part of this can likely be attributed to the introduction of the 120Hz ProMotion display. Additionally, the iPhone 13 is said to carry the Apple A15 Bionic, the company’s next-generation chipset for the iPhone. This comes after reports earlier in the week point to a massive camera overhaul. Finally, Gurman shares that the notch will be ever-so-slightly smaller, but the screen sizes will remain the same.
With many eyes looking towards the iPhone 13, the Apple Watch Series 7 could steal the show. Apple’s next wearable iteration will provide a “bit of a redesign”. This means flattened edges, similar to the iPhone 12, along with the next-generation wearable processor. This redesign could also make way for slightly larger batteries, which would definitely be a welcome addition. Gurman also reveals that a few additions are coming to Apple Fitness+ in the way of Time to Run and Audio Meditations.
If there’s one device that’s been rumored for a long time, it’s the redesigned iPad Mini. It has been more than two years since the 5th-generation iPad Mini made its way into our hearts. But according to Gurman, the iPad Mini 6 is set to make its debut at this September event. Gurman posits that the new iPad Mini is likely to become “an Apple fan favorite”, featuring a complete redesign. This includes slimmer bezels, upgraded internals, and likely a design similar to the iPad Pro and iPad Air. And speaking of the iPad in general, the iPad 9 will be revealed at the event. Not much is really known just yet, but we can expect a slimmer design and an updated processor.
The AirPods 3 have been rumored for longer than the iPhone 13 at this point, and Gurman claims its debut at this event. Gurman backs up previous rumors and leaks, pointing to an AirPods Pro-like design. However, Apple is unlikely to bring over the silicone ear-tips, meaning that we’ll see a slightly different in-ear shape. It’s also possible that the AirPods 3 will feature “shorter stems”. Additionally, Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency Modes are not included.
There’s something missing
It isn’t like we aren’t going to have enough devices to ogle over at the September event. However, there is one device that is conspicuously missing from the planned September event. The MacBook Pro is still not ready for shipments yet, and Gurman reveals they won’t be announced at the iPhone event. Considering that just last week we learned that mass production had started, it doesn’t come as too much of a surprise.
However, it’s likely that we’ll see this redesigned MacBook Pro at a separate event sometime in November. But I’m keeping my fingers crossed for just a press release so I can grab one as soon as possible. Gurman states that the upcoming MacBook Pro model will come in two different versions (14-inch and 16-inch), while sporting the M1X chipset instead of the Apple M2.
Earlier this morning, a report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via 9to5Mac) stated that MacBook Pro will lead the way for Apple’s new push into mini-LED technology. This comes as a bit of a surprise given the iPad Pro 12.9 2021 already features this new display panel. However, if mini-LED comes to the MacBook Pro and subsequently the MacBook Air, this could pay off in huge dividends for the user with improved display quality and better battery life.
We believe that MacBooks, not iPads, mainly drive Mini LED panel shipments. MacBook shipments have not grown much in the past few years. However, we expect MacBook shipments to grow significantly by 20% YoY, or more in 2021 and 2022, due to the adoption of Mini LED panels, Apple Silicon, and all-new designs.
Other rumors for these upcoming MacBook Pro’s include a redesigned falling in line with what we’ve seen from the iMac. We could also see the re-introduction of useful ports like an SD card reader, HDMI, or just plain-ole USB A. While we’re excited for the iPad Mini and iPhone 13, the MacBook Pro redesign could be incredible.
