Instead of a soft reset, try a hard one by holding both Home and Power until you see the Apple Logo. If the problem persists, make sure you charge your iPad with its original cable and charger and connect directly to a wall outlet–not a USB port or hub.
Then once you try charging, connect to iTunes and see if it recognizes the iPad.
