I’m new to iphones. My 3GS was used by someone who had the same carrier as I had. He restored the phone before he gave it to me. I tried to activate it using my SIM card and it came up with a message “there is no SIM card installed”. Long story shorter my carrier said to have it unlocked and see if that worked and it did and I can use all aspects of the phone running 4.0.1. The company that unlocked the phone says I can’t upgrade it or I’ll have to have it unlocked again. Is this true? Is there a fix for this? Most apps won’t run until it’s upgraded.
I’m afraid it’s true. Everytime you update your iOS using iTunes it also restores the device back to factory settings. As the iPhone was originally a Locked phone, it reverts back to the Locked state. However why should that stop you from updating your iPhone ? Update the iOS and contact the carrier to Unlock the device again.
