iPad Model A1430; Updated to max iOS 9.3.5
I have been using the iPad email app for years with no problem. About nine months ago, it quit sending mail. It received fine, but when I tried to send mail a popup message appeared:
Cannot send mail. The username or password for
“[[email protected]]” is incorrect
Since I hadn’t changed the username or the password in Settings and the provider hadn’t changed anything, this was a bit of a puzzle.
Nothing I did made a bit of difference.
Someone suggested that I delete the account completely and start over.
That worked, and I have had no trouble until about a week ago when it all happened again.
The same message, checked username and password, all present and correct, no joy.
I deleted and re-installed the account several times but it didn’t work.
I clicked Reset All Settings and re-installed again, nada.
After most of these attempts, I have re-started the iPad.
What baffles me is that there were no changes made to password, username, port settings, nothing.
I would like to keep using this iPad, but it may be that the creeping obsolescence gremlins are at work and it’s about to smoke.
Any advice would really be appreciated.

Try entering your username and password manually for the outgoing mail server setting. Even if it says optional, it’s best to enter those details.
First, use Apple’s mail settings lookup tool to verify your email settings for the Mail app:
Once you have these settings for each of your mail accounts:
Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars >choose each of your email accounts (one by one)
Then select Account
Look for Outgoing Mail Server
Tap the server name (it’s next to SMTP)
Enter your username and password
Verify any other information for the outgoing server, like the hostname, server port number, and SSL

Liz, the fifteenth time must be the charm!
I followed your instructions exactly, thinkin’ hell, I’ve done all this a dozen times (except for checking the settings on the Apple Support site). Well, I HAD done it a lot and between me and the ancient iPad, screwed it up every time.
The Apple support link gave me all the proper settings.
I checked the outgoing server port and it was set for 1025.
I re-set it to 25, per Apple.
I think it can work with either one, but no matter, it’s now 25.
I had previously entered the webmail password under OPTIONAL.
It struck me that there were more dots than necessary, so I counted carefully, came up with 13 dots and only 11 characters in the password.
I re-entered the password and was about to hit DONE when I noticed that the string of dots was too long.
I deleted it and entered the password again.
I found that unless I just barely tapped the password character and waited until the letter or digit changed into a dot, it would enter two, sometimes three characters or sometimes the correct character and a space.
It took me three tries to get that fiddly little thing in there.
I did not try copy and paste, as that method doesn’t show the actual character briefly before becoming a dot.
When I went to the previous page and checked the password for the incoming, there were 11 dots.
I deleted and re-entered it several times and it was right on the money each time, with no fiddling around or waiting for it to settle down.
I think that there is a gremlin who lives in that outgoing password field.
It sleeps a lot, and once in a while, it wakes up in a bad mood and screws up the password.
No matter, now I know how to deal with it.
