IPAD recently updated, requires icloud password to sign on, doesn’t accept the apple password working everywhere else, iphone and computer. Makes IPAD unavailable for increasing lengths of time

My iPad screen comes up saying “ipad is disabled”. Then it tells me how many minutes I must wait to try again. I have tried all my known passwords, but do not have what is required, and I don’t know why. What is required, it seems, is something called a “passcode’. That is entirely new to me. Is there some way I can fix the problem, which seems to have occurred out of nowhere. It showed up when I left off reading a book on my Kindle, and left it for a minute to get a drink of water. When it first show up, it gave me a minute to fix the problem, then five minutes, then fifteen, then sixty….
Is there any reason this sort of thing should happen?
