My iPad won’t power down with the Sleep/ Wake button or by holding the Sleep/Wake and Home….I know about the reboot…it will not do that. Even when I get ready to close the iPad cover, I always hit the Sleep/Wake just to power down…..it doesn’t work anymore. The iPad is always on and is so slow navigating from app to app, even though I am hitting Home twice and closing all apps everytime.. It charges just fine.
      Please help…

      Hi Gerene,
Hmmm, I’ve never heard of that before have you tried holding down the power button so you can then slide to power off?
Or checking your iPads battery power maybe try it plugged in on the charger.
Also I’ve found if you have a Mac or PC you can plug the USB into the USB Port and have your Lightening Adapter plugged into the iPad. Using any computer you can search for problems you may have via youtube.
One of the quite common problems may sometimes be any iPad saying please plug in the USB for iTunes a PC or mac can fix this.
I’m guessing you could try this method just plugged into a computer and keep it on and then if it’ll let you.
1.Hold the power button and see if you can slide to power off.
      2. If that doesn’t work try holding your iPad’s Home button and the Power button until you see the apple logo then let go, it should put it into recovery mode and then be able to switch both on and off.
Also if that’s the case all you’ll need will be your iPad. Good luck I hope this helps,
      Regards

      Sean

My iPad won’t turn off. I have tried to hold down sleep/wake button at same time with home for over 10 seconds even 30seconds but it remains on. I fear that when it eventually powers off it may not go on. So I just recharge and use. Please help!

My AT&T 64GB iPad Air 2 with iOS 9.1 will not turn off. It doesn’t matter how long I hold the sleep/wake button down or hold the sleep/wake button and home button simultaneously. It won’t power off. The slider to power off never appears and the force reboot never works.

I allowed the battery go to zero percent so the iPad “powered off” with the hopes that a shut down would resolve the issue. It didn’t. After charging it and powering it back on, I still cannot power it off.

I reset it to factory defaults, hoping a reset would resolve the issue. It didn’t. It still won’t power off.

This appears to be a bug in iOS 9 that wasn’t resolved in iOS 9.1 based on when posts about this issue started to appear.

I am having the same problem. I recently upgraded to iOS 9.something or other and wonder if it is related. I cannot rotate the screen no matter what and now I can’t turn it off as Margaret and Josh reported. What is going on Apple? What can I do??

Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears – ignore the red slider – let go of the buttons. After it totally restarts, try to shut down again.

If that doesn’t work, let the battery drain out and then connect If you try connecting the device to your computer and launch iTunes. Then select Restore. I followed the article on this site on frozen iPad and it worked for me.

This is definitely a weird problem. Especially given that in joshthegeek’s case, after draining the battery completely it still doesn’t work. Here’s a tip that you can try and let us know if it works for you. Instead of the lock button to power down, we will try to power down the device in another way.
Go to Settings > General > Accessibility. Tap on the Assistivetouch and Turn it on . you will see a circle thingy appear. Tap on it. On the next pop-up menu tap on Device. Press and hold on the option for “Lock Screen” and you should see the Slide to Power Off dialog appear. Slide to turn off the device. Please report back if it works.

I upgraded last week to the newest OS and have issues.
Says it is connected to Wifi, but it does not work, cannot power off the ipad mini.
Moving around to Apps very slow.
Also not connecting to itunes, or showing ans an external drive on my PC.

Finally the press home and sleep button showed the apple logo, and it is recognized in itunes, it is again updating the OS.

Hello, I was in the middle of using Siri on my iPad mini with Retina Display, and while I can use Siri, I can not exit Siri, nor can I power off. I have the most recent update. What’s up? How can this be resolved? It will not respond to holding the on/off button on the side. The rotate screen is also not working. Siri talks to me and finds me stuff I ask for on the Internet by voice, but the iPad mini screen is totally unresponsive to any swipes. I tried plugging the iPad into my Mac Laptop, with iTunes on, but the iPad just dings at me and the screen text goes on and off in the process of ding ding ding ding … so I unplugged it from the computer. Any solutions please?

I have this issue on a school owned iPad2 running 8.1. I followed SK’s solution and was able to turn it off using assistive touch.

Now, of course, I have the opposite problem in that it won’t come back on using the power button. Connecting to a power source will turn it on, however.

The sleep button will wake it up, but not put it back to sleep.

This seems like a hardware issue to me.

I am having a big problem with daughters I pad. I can not do anything with it. I have tried every shutdown option I know off. When I hold sleep button it goes to the shut down screen but wont let me swipe to turn off. The home button is completely unresponsive. I have let the battery drain and shut down the I pad thinking this would help the reset and no luck. The computer doesn’t even recognize the I pad anymore. Not sure what else to do.

I cannot turn off my iPad. The screen rotation lock although appearing to be on is not working. I have tried the suggestions above. PLEASE do not tell me to hold the home and sleep button. Have done it 20 times I guess . All I get is Siri.
Have also gone to Accessibility and reached the screen with ” devices” as suggested. This made the screen go black but when reawakened the issues were exactly the same.

      Hi,
I’m facing similar problems. I just changed the power button on my iPad and whenever I press on it now, my iPad doesn’t turn off but just stalls at the page it is at and after a few seconds, prompt me to power off my iPad. Sometimes, without me even doing anything, the power off option keeps on coming on to the screen, over and over again. Even AssistiveTouch doesn’t work. Sometimes even my home button doesn’t work. I have an iPad 3 which is 3 years old with the latest iOS… is there something wrong with the battery or something? Or is there any other solution? I tried restarting my iPad and stuff but it doesn’t work…

What I did was plug up my ipad to my computer, pressed the home button twice to get siri and then held down the home and sleep buttons at the same time for about 7 seconds. My ipad then showed the apple logo for about a minute and came back on. Prior to this, my mini would not power down or show that it was charging. Once it rebooted it showed the correct amount of battery power and worked fine. Not sure if this will always work, but hopefully this forced reboot will make things easier in the future.

I have an ipad 16gb (not sure if its 1 or 2 or air or whatever since it’s not labeled as anything other than ipad 16gb). The ipad screen says “ipad is disabled, connect to itunes”. This is because the passcode was tried way too many times and it disabled the ipad. I try to connect to itunes, and it says “you must enter your passcode on the ipad before it can be used with itunes”. But there is no way to enter the passcode since it’s disabled. It is stuck in a loop. It also will NOT shut off, no matter which combination of buttons i use or how long I press them for. There’s not even a on screen slider power off. I have tried every method available to get it to turn off. I have even let the battery die completely. Is there any software that will fix this? Or a way to open it up and reset something?

My IPad Mini 4 will not turn off. I do have a smart case, but my IPad refuses to recognize that and will not give the lock/unblock button that some people have suggested using. No matter how many times I restart and reset, it will not recognize my Smart Cover. Yes, my smart is the right kind, I’ve checked. I’ve never had this problem before until I got my screen replaced and the tech guy messed around with my settings. In a vain attempt to reset them, I reset ALL the settings…and in doing so I lost my connection to the Smart Cover. How can I get it back?? Please help!!!

        Hi Willis,

A lot depends on the iOS your ipad runs, but here’s a few ideas:

The most common problem if your iPad is not sleeping properly is that it has not been inserted into its case correctly. The sleep / wake functionality works via a magnet inserted into the covers lid (front cover). If this doesn’t line up correctly with the magnetic sensor in the iPad then the function won’t work correctly.

Check this setting. Settings > General > iPad cover lock > Unlock ON. The Smart Cover is activated in the Settings App, General and in the right-hand panel under Lock/Unlock and slide the switch over showing a green activation color. From the Home screen tap ‘Settings’
This should automatically open up in the “General” options, but if not simply tap “General” in the left-hand side options. In the 4th block of General options you will see “iPad Cover Lock / Unlock” option. If this is set to “Off” it means that the Sleep / Wake function has been disabled. Simply slide this across into the “On” position to activate Press the Home button to return

If your smart case uses Bluetooth, go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure BT is toggled ON. Once on, it shows the list of devices it’s already paired with.

I can’t turn it off; holding sleep/home burron makes the logo disappear for a few seconds, then it reallers, but nothing else happens.
I’ve tried holding the home button down, I’ve tried all the permutations of plugging into pc then ipad, then hoping itunes, but itunes doens’t do anything.

I am stuck on the apple logo, can’t go fowrds, cant go back. Cannot access anything, including passcode, settings. At the moment all I have is apple logo to look at.

On an iPad with no Home Button and iPhones X or later: Press and hold the Side/Top/Power button and either volume button until the slider appears.

On an iPad or iPhone with a Home Button and iPod Touch: press and hold the Side/Top/Power button until the slider appears

Drag the slider to turn the device off and after the device turns off, press and hold that Side/Top/Power button again until you see the Apple Logo.

With iOS 11 and above, restart using Settings > General > Shut Down

        Hi Jess,

Connect your iPad to iTunes (macOS Mojave and below or Windows PC) or Finder (macOS Catalina) and at the message: “There’s a problem with the Pad that requires it to be updated or restored.”

Click Update (not Restore) to reinstall iOS and keep your data.

You can use anyone’s Mac or Windows PC as long as it has iTunes installed or for Macs, offer iTunes or Finder app for macOS Catalina+.

You can even go to an Apple Store or Apple sales center, like in Best Buy, and ask them to use iTunes to update your iPad there.

Hi, it is possible that your iPad problem is caused by some system failures. If it is the case, you can try a repair tool to help you. I have used such a tool called Joyoshare UltFix iOS system recovery to fix the same problem that happened on my iPhone X. Amazingly, it causes no data loss during the whole process. I think you can have a try if necessary. You will not be disappointed.
