Messages keeps adding an unwanted recipient

When I type in a recipient’s name on a text, Messages adds another recipient and it’s always a recipient who is not on Messages so the color bar behind the name is different. I’ve deleted their contact card, but then Messages adds another unwanted recipient who, again, is not on Messages. This is very frustrating and I can’t find where others have had this same problem.
