The first night after installing the latest IOS update I plugged the re charger into a wall socket like always. This morning when I unplugged it and went outside with coffee it was really HOT and would not and will not open.

Did you use an authentic apple lightning cable? Aftermarket cables are often not grounded and can develop shorts that will seriously destroy an ipad/iphone. Also check the lightning port for any debris/damage/black or missing copper pins.
Added heat means loss of energy, so your ipad/iphone was refusing/dropping electricity at the connector for whatever reason.
The issue is most likely caused by a poor quality or damaged lightning cable.
