I have an iPad Air (1), 64GB, wifi only, IOS 9.2, and 3 real PITA problems with Safari. They seem related in a chicken/egg kinda way. Here they are, in no particular order: (1) closes open tabs without warning/notification, so I don’t know they’re gone until afterwards; 2) doesn’t save my history, so I can’t reopen the tabs it’s closed (no, I’m not in Privacy mode); (3) it takes >10 minutes to sync after adding an item to favorites or reading list, during which time I can’t do anything. We have 3 iPad Airs (2-1’s and 1-2) but this is the only one with these problems.
Changing the default browser and modifying autosync might help, but I doubt I can – am I wrong? I’ve tried other browsers, but can’t find one that works. I need tabbed browsing (# of tabs limited only by hardware), save history & bookmarks, share/save to email-photos-Instapaper/Wunderlist, and stay connected to my network. If you know one like that, let me know! And of course, if you have any ideas on how to fix Safari, that’d be great, too.
Thanx in advance for any advice, help, sympathy and commiseration offered.

@Julie, Something is up with Safari. I have noticed a lot of problems on my iPad as well. I didn’t exactly have the same issue as yours but mine kept crashing after the upgrade. It would just crash out of the blue for no reason at all. Here is what I tried:
a) Clear History and Website Data in Safari Settings PLUS Reset Network Settings on the ipad– This worked for me for a few days till the problems started to happen again.
b) Turn off preload top hit to OFF in Safari setting — this didn’t do much but it is advisable for slow browser issues
c) Although it is a hassle, but what eventually stopped the Safari problems is a complete Reset and full restore to factory settings via iTunes. If you are looking for alternative browsers, give “Dolphin” or “Puffin Pro” a chance.

Thanks, Pete, I have done all that. I already have Puffin, Dolphin, Ecosia, Maxthon & UC Browser+ installed, but since I can’t change the default browser, all links open in (very buggy) Safari. I want my Android back!!!

When I open safari from my app on iPad and iPhone all seems normal. As soon as I touch search bar to type then safari drops out.
All other Apple devices in the home on different accounts still work normally
