      I drive a 2017 Corolla.

When I first got the car, I had an iPhone 6 running iOS 11.

When the phone was connected through Bluetooth, I could receive messages through my car.

If I was driving, the car would read them off to me.

If I was stopped, the messages would appear on the screen to read.

After I updated the iOS to 12, the messages stopped coming through the car’s Bluetooth.

At first, I thought it was the phone itself, but since I’ve gotten the XR, I still can’t get messages through the car’s Bluetooth.

The car says the phone is connected for both phone and audio functions, including my contacts/address book. However, when I go into the car’s apps and pick messaging (which is separate from the phone) it acts like it’s processing (saying I may need to operate the device), but nothing happens.

Nothing pops up on my phone, and the car’s “processing” stops without any further messages.

Is there anyone else who drives a Toyota whom this has happened to?

Also, I’m sure if this is a problem with the phone’s software, or the car’s. It’s not the end of the world, but I’d really like to get this function to work on my car again.

      I have a 2015 Highlander. Same issue.

Toyota told me it was the Apple update and only a problem with iPhones.

Though my sister has a 2015 Rav and same phone and hers is fine.

Another sister has Tundra and her car also stopped working.

They told me I could install their newer sound system at a cost of $500!

No thank you. I would love to hear they are getting a fix for this.

      I have a 2014 Honda CR-V. I had the same issue with iPhone 6.

Honda said it was an iPhone issue.

My boyfriend’s android phone still read texts in my car, so they must have been right.

I recently got a 7 & cleared all phone data in my car & it works again.

I did more searching, this time on Apple’s official support forum, and found a solution that worked for me (the person who posted it said their car dealer had them try this).

For the iPhone, try going into Bluetooth settings, tap the info icon next to the device (your car) and make sure notifications are turned on.

For my phone, it seems this somehow got turned off when I did the iOS update

After all this time, I can’t believe it was this simple.

A reader let us know this tip worked for him when he had similar issues with his car’s infotainment system.

      Go to Settings > Bluetooth
Tap the info icon next to your car’s BT system’s name
      Turn notifications on

It appears that iOS updates often reset this particular notification to OFF.

This is now fixed. I plugged my Iphone into the USB port in my Mazda 6 pressed the car play option on the steering wheel (apple car play software not loaded into the car by the way ) and miraculously my SMS started working later in the day.
      Hope that helps someone !

Having same issue with iPhone after installing the 13 update.

My Toyota 4Runner will now not connect for messaging. Was not an issue before update.

Even tried deleting device from car audio system and re-pairing it. Did not work. And my setting on iPhone and car audio system are correct.

Thanks for another biggie update Apple.

I have had this issue for about a week (since I performed the latest Apple software update). Is there a fix? It is most annoying!

I’m the same, issue since last update and have tried all the normal stuff like disconnecting and deleting all phone / connections and re-setting up, nothing seems to work! When my phone is plugged in it will let me dictate messages but won’t read them or give me notifications of texts or calendar alerts.
Please tell me this is an easy to fix thing as it’s really annoying!

I have a 2014 Nissan Xtrail and when I get a new text message Siri will not read it to me as I need to unlock my phone first??

I can make calls and send messages through Siri and Bluetooth in my car, just not able to read new ones which are frustrating.

I have tried forgetting the device in my car and phone and adding them again but no luck, any help would be great. Thanks

Similar to my 2017 Subaru Outback. But it seems to be a phone issue as opposed to the car.

Things worked fine with my iPhone 7, but when I “upgraded” to iPhone 11Pro, it won’t read text messages.

When asked it says I must unlock my iPhone first. When I unlock the phone it works, but I don’t like to fiddle with the phone while driving. In Settings, I have it set to allow the use of Siri when locked, but it doesn’t.

Note that I can use Siri to make calls while driving, but not to read text messages.

Thanks for the tip – I thought that it may have been simple but hadn’t got around to searching for the solution. Have just turned notifications back on and will check it when I get out to the car this afternoon. Cheers, Julie

You may need to shut down your phone and restart it. Shut vehicle off and restart it. Shut off Bluetooth and then turn it back on and then pair it back up to your vehichle.

I’ve been driving my 2018 RAV all this time without this function, thinking it’s just something that won’t work with my iPhone 8 Plus. Last week I had to forget the Bluetooth connection and reconfigure. I turned on the notification option and wow- what a great feature!🤪🙄.
