When I first got the car, I had an iPhone 6 running iOS 11.
When the phone was connected through Bluetooth, I could receive messages through my car.
If I was driving, the car would read them off to me.
If I was stopped, the messages would appear on the screen to read.
After I updated the iOS to 12, the messages stopped coming through the car’s Bluetooth.
At first, I thought it was the phone itself, but since I’ve gotten the XR, I still can’t get messages through the car’s Bluetooth.
The car says the phone is connected for both phone and audio functions, including my contacts/address book. However, when I go into the car’s apps and pick messaging (which is separate from the phone) it acts like it’s processing (saying I may need to operate the device), but nothing happens.
Nothing pops up on my phone, and the car’s “processing” stops without any further messages.
Is there anyone else who drives a Toyota whom this has happened to?
Also, I’m sure if this is a problem with the phone’s software, or the car’s. It’s not the end of the world, but I’d really like to get this function to work on my car again.
I did more searching, this time on Apple’s official support forum, and found a solution that worked for me (the person who posted it said their car dealer had them try this).
For the iPhone, try going into Bluetooth settings, tap the info icon next to the device (your car) and make sure notifications are turned on.
For my phone, it seems this somehow got turned off when I did the iOS update
After all this time, I can’t believe it was this simple.
My notifications are on in the phone in the bluetooth setting but now my notification in the bluetooth area in my car 2016 Mazda 6 is not highlighted and I cant find anywhere to turn it on. It now wont read the iphone notifications. The SMS on the car is highlighted . I forgot the device and re connected but same issue no change.
Any ideas anyone ?
This is now fixed. I plugged my Iphone into the USB port in my Mazda 6 pressed the car play option on the steering wheel (apple car play software not loaded into the car by the way ) and miraculously my SMS started working later in the day.
Hope that helps someone !
I’m the same, issue since last update and have tried all the normal stuff like disconnecting and deleting all phone / connections and re-setting up, nothing seems to work! When my phone is plugged in it will let me dictate messages but won’t read them or give me notifications of texts or calendar alerts.
Please tell me this is an easy to fix thing as it’s really annoying!
Similar to my 2017 Subaru Outback. But it seems to be a phone issue as opposed to the car.
Things worked fine with my iPhone 7, but when I “upgraded” to iPhone 11Pro, it won’t read text messages.
When asked it says I must unlock my iPhone first. When I unlock the phone it works, but I don’t like to fiddle with the phone while driving. In Settings, I have it set to allow the use of Siri when locked, but it doesn’t.
Note that I can use Siri to make calls while driving, but not to read text messages.
Thanks for the tip – I thought that it may have been simple but hadn’t got around to searching for the solution. Have just turned notifications back on and will check it when I get out to the car this afternoon. Cheers, Julie
You may need to shut down your phone and restart it. Shut vehicle off and restart it. Shut off Bluetooth and then turn it back on and then pair it back up to your vehichle.
Thank you for the check the bluetooth info comments, that was the problem for me too, here almost a year later! Mine was off on my XR under bluetooth. Thank you !
I’ve been driving my 2018 RAV all this time without this function, thinking it’s just something that won’t work with my iPhone 8 Plus. Last week I had to forget the Bluetooth connection and reconfigure. I turned on the notification option and wow- what a great feature!🤪🙄.
Did anyone find a resolution for this apart from show notification button, for some reason when I click on the i Button next to Bluetooth for car there is no show notification button
SOLUTION: Go to settings > Bluetooth > tap on the information symbol for connected phone > turn Show Notifications on > turn vehicle off then turn vehicle back on.
Problem should be solved. It worked for me.
My 2019 Kia Optima will tell me when i get a phone call i will hear my ringtone but not when i get a text message. How do i get it so i can hear it and show up on my screen?
SOLUTION: Go to settings > Bluetooth > tap on the information symbol for connected phone > turn Show Notifications on > turn vehicle off then turn the vehicle back on.
The problem should be solved. It worked for me.
