Since iOS 13 the thumbnails of my videos in the Photos App no longer consistently show the first frame of the video. Many have a seemingly random frame from within the video. For me this is a serious problem because I have over 250 memories and travel videos made in recent years. To be able to recognise them easily in the Photos app I always included a simple title in the first frame that was clearly readable in the thumbnail but now nearly all of them show something I can’t immediately identify.
This problem has persisted through several iOS updates. Lengthy consultation with Apple support did not resolve this issue and the senior consultant did not offer any explanation or fix. I tried various workarounds, duplicating, trimming and also turning off iCloud. Frustratingly although this often seemed to fix the thumbnail at first by the next day it would have reverted to a “random” frame.
The team at LumaFusion have suggested to me that this is either a bug or a new Apple feature to automatically select a significant thumbnail for videos. If so it doesn’t work at all well. Even with short clips and clips and with obvious titling the new thumbnail can be quite random.
Apparently a video has a thumbnail assigned in some sort of hidden metadata. Whereas with Live Photos the key photo can be set by the user this is not an option for video. This problem is made worse because no file names show in the Photos app and the thumbnail is the only thing to go by.
Even if relatively few people make videos compared to taking photos I’m still surprised that I haven’t found any mention of this issue online. Surely it has puzzled others too but it doesn’t seem to have attracted any attention. Perhaps Apple toolbox could investigate and publish something on this. Alternatively if there is something out there I have missed maybe someone could point me in the right direction.
