How to know what iPad or iPod model you have

By Dan Helyer 2 comments Last updated July 28, 2019

You might need to know what model iPad or iPod you have if you want to sell it, get technical support, or buy insurance for it. But it isn’t always easy to find out exactly which model you have. Even with the original packaging, sometimes Apple doesn’t make it obvious.

Luckily, you can use this post to answer that question once and for all. Follow the instructions below to find out which model iPad or iPod you have.

Find your model name in the Settings

iPad Pro Hello Set Up Screen
If your iPad is not set up, you can get the model number from the back instead.

If your device powers on and is running at least iOS 12.2 you can easily find out which iPad or iPod model you have from the Settings. You may need to update to the latest iOS or iPadOS software first.

If your device has been erased, you can either set it up as new to view the Settings or follow the instructions below to get the model number from the back of the device.

These instructions only work for iPad or iPod touch devices. If you have an iPod classic, iPod nano, iPod mini, or iPod shuffle you need to go to the next section.

How to find out your iPad or iPod model from Settings:

  1. Go to Settings > General > About.
  2. At the top of the screen you should see:
    1. your device Name
    2. your Software Version
    3. and your Model Name.

The Model Name refers to the iPad or iPod model you have. It might say iPad mini 4 or iPod touch (7th generation).

iPad mini name in Settings
With the latest software, you can find your iPad or iPod model in Settings.

Find your model number

You can also identify your iPad or iPod from its model number. The model number usually starts with the letter A followed by four numbers, like this: A1234. The only time it’s different is with the original iPod, which starts with the letter M.

There are several places you can find your model number:

  • in the Settings app
  • on the back of your device
  • or on the original packaging.

1. How to find your model number in the Settings app

Model Number in iOS Settings
Tap the Model Number in Settings to see a different version of it.

If you have an iPad or an iPod touch you can easily get your model number from the Settings app. It doesn’t matter what version of iPadOS or iOS you are using for this.

  1. Go to Settings > General > About.
  2. Find Model Number on the About page.
  3. Tap the model number to see a shorter version that starts with the letter A.

Use the tables below to look up your iPad or iPod from the model number.

2. How to find your model number on the back of your device

Model number on the back of iPad
Find the model number printed on the back of your iPad or iPod.

If your device doesn’t power on or you don’t want to use the Settings, you can also find the model number printed on the back.

First, you need to carefully remove your iPad or iPod from its case, if you have one.

Look at the back of your iPad or iPod, amongst the small print near the bottom it says Model followed by your model number. It should be in the format A1234.

Use the tables below to look up your iPad or iPod model from the model number.

3. How to find your model number on the original packaging

Model number on packaging
If you still have it, you can find your model number on the iPad or iPod box.

If you still have the packaging your iPad or iPod came in you can find the model number on the box. Look for the sticker with a barcode on it, this is usually on the bottom of the box.

Above the barcode you should see the word Model followed by your model number. It should be in the format A1234.

It is not the same as your part number, which is longer and begins with the letter M.

Use the tables below to look up your iPad or iPod model from the model number.

What does my iPad or iPod model number mean?

Now you know the model number of your device you can use it to look up what iPad or iPod you have. Find your model number in the tables below to get your device’s name.

We’ve separated each type of iPad or iPod into a different table to simplify things. If you know you have an iPod nano, for example, you only need to look in that section. Use the links below to jump to the relevant section.

Alternatively, use the Find function on your browser to search this entire post for your model number. You can do this using command+F on your Mac or control+F on your PC. In iOS and iPadOS, tap the Share button in Safari and select Find.
