iPhone 5 Wi-Fi not working, How to fix

By SK 14 comments Last updated September 24, 2012

Several users have reported that they are having Wi-Fi connection problems on their iPhone 5. They reported that the iPhone seems to be connected to the Wi-Fi networks but either the internet is very slow or doesn’t connect to the Internet (thus no data transfer) at all.

Possible fixes (please try each tip until your issue is resolved):

  • Some users have reported that changing the Wi-Fi channel number fixed their issue. Wi-Fi channels can range from 1 to 11. Try changing your Wi-Fi channels to see if this fixes your issue. Please read your router’s manual if you are unsure how to do so. Apple recommends setting this to “Auto” mode. If your router does not support “Auto” mode, you need to choose a channel manually. Try different channels. Please see this article: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
  • Try changing your router security setting on your Wi-Fi to either (a) WPA Personal (b) WEP or (c) WPA TKIP in order to fix this issue. Note that these settings are discouraged because of their security weaknesses.

If this does not work, try the following (please try each tip until your issue is resolved):

  •  Turn  Wi-Fi off and then back on by tapping Settings > Wi-Fi
  • Reset your network settings: Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
  • Update your router’s firmware
  • Restart your device
  • Try turning your router off, waiting 20 seconds and then switching it back on again
  • Try resetting your router to factory settings
  • Tap “Forget this Network” and then try to connect

My iPhone 5c has had this problem since I purchased it new a couple years ago. I keep thinking the next iOS upgrade will fix the issue. Each time, It has not. The quick “fix” has been to turn on airplane mode and then turn it off again. But, why should I do this about 30 percent of the time I touch my phone to make it work? This is not localized to just one phone either. It happens across all iPhone 5c models in the house. It’s not an issue with other iOS devices; and, not a problem with any of the Windows devices. The other strange thing is that the Internet connection starts out fast (e.g. about half the speed of the purchased rate unlike any of the Windows products); but then heads downhill from there… in which a week or so later it will crawl at less than 2 percent of the purchased maximum speed. Can’t swap over to cellular, because signals are nearly non-existent at the house. Sure would be nice if Apple actually fixed their product. I’ve also tried the solutions of changing the router, getting a new one, etc. That turned into a waste of my time and money.

Just backed up my Iphone 5C, (both phones) And they both will not connect to home wifi, (I’m using this wifi to type on my laptop)

Both these phones will connect to other networks outside of my home, just not my home wifi.

    Still an issue.

this issue has reared its head on the iphone 5 of my wife, myself and also our ipad, it came from nowhere and it is incredibly annoying to have the ‘logon unsuccessful’ page from apple appear every time we try to connect to wifi!! wish Apple would sort it out asap instead of burying its head and pretending there is no problem!! Even the technician on the phone said that it has been a common issue!!

I found that turning on and off the flight mode fixed mine. But I was not able to download via 3G.
