Several users of the newly released Adobe CS5 suite have reported an issue in which Photoshop CS5 and other apps in the package crash upon quit. When this problem manifests, users receive a spinning beach ball when choosing “Quit,” followed several seconds later by a message stating that the CS5 application unexpectedly quit.
This problem may occur after employing a fix for a separate but related issue in which Photoshop CS5 preferences will not stick.
Potential fix
In some cases, this problem may be resolved by creating a new user account
Meanwhile, Adobe users and employees alike are venting frustration with the issue.
A user post on Adobe’s support forum reads:
“So, how can it be that Adobe ships a product of this magnitude with clearly inadequate installation testing on the universe of your possible installation examples”
An Adobe employee responds:
“We’ve been asking the same thing internally.”

It’s 2017 and CS5, which works perfectly okay on my older intel iMac, has started crashing on quit and performing badly on my new iMac with High Sierra.
Some fonts make it boggle and it can be super laggy.
Is it a case of Gimp from now on?
Hi Chloe,
I’m sorry that you’re experiencing such headaches! It must feel awful to see Photoshop working so well on the older machine only to fail so miserably on your new machine!
Because High Sierra totally changes the file system to the new Apple File System (APFS), troubles are very possible, especially with older programs not designed for this new file system. And it’s unclear if Adobe plans to release any patches for older software like CS5.
We have heard from a couple of users that CS4 is absolutely NOT working while CS 5.5 is working. So, if you don’t want to update to Adobe’s Cloud program, you may want to consider purchasing a license for CS 5.5 or 6–you can usually fins these for pretty good deals in the second hand market.
Another option is to uninstall Photoshop, remove all it’s files and extensions, and then do a clean install.
Anyway, keep us posted. Your tips are sure to help others too. Awesome!
Cheers,
Liz
Months later and my copy of CS5 is STILL crashing on quit. I have applied al updates.
Incredibly annoying.

They were too busy telling the world how wrong Apple was because Adobe software is so great. Maybe if the put more time into software development than into whining in the press, they might do a better job.
Yeah, I’ve had the problem consistently with Illustrator CS4–at least 8 out of 10 quits end with a crash. No other problems with the software, it’s just a regular occurrence.
And if the “fix” is to create a new user account, well then I guess it will just keep crashing.
I’ve been saying for the last few years that if Adobe really wants to make me happy, they’ll focus on squashing bugs and making the code more efficient. I want the software that I have to run better, to run faster, and to run well. New features are all well and good, but that’s not what I want most.
I’ll be holding off on this upgrade for the time being.
The Crash On Quit issue has been around since Illustrator CS and was never fixed. The issue of installing applications that were unselected also started with CS.
What I would like to know is why when I deselected all of the apps and options except for Photoshop in the installation program, the installer placed folders in my Applications directory for Encore, Premier and Contribute?
You see, the way it should work Adobe, is when I deselect a program, I do not want any part of it on my computer.
This actually stopped happening to me in CS5. CS4 would crash on quit maybe 90% of the time! I hope it doesnt come back.
On another note, Photoshop CS5 is a memory hog and has slowed down my production time incredibly. I have to use CS4 now… Im praying this is fixed, but I have a suspicion it is just the nature of running it in 64-bit.
