When Apple introduced iOS 5, they showed off many of the major new features such as News Stand and iCloud. However, Apple didn’t show off Text Expansion. Text Expansion lets you set shortcuts for words or phrases. For instance, you can set “nm” to autocorrect to “not much” when typed.
This tutorial requires an iOS device running iOS 5. You do not need any extra software installed for this tutorial.
Setting Up Text Expansion
To start, open the settings app on your iOS device. Once it has completely launched, scroll down until you see the “General” option.
Now scroll all the way down until you see the “Keyboard” option. When you see it, tap on it. From here you can set other keyboard options such as spell check, caps lock and auto capitalization.
To configure Text Expansion, scroll all the way down until you see the “Shortcuts” header. To set a new shortcut, simply tap the “Add New Shortcut…” button. You will now be brought to a screen where you can set your new shortcut. Under “Phrase”, type the word or phrase that you would like to make a shortcut field expand to. Under “Shortcut,” type in the shortcut you would like to use for the phrase you entered into the “Phrase” box above. When you’re done, press the ”Save” button that is located towards the upper right-hand corner of your screen.
To delete a shortcut, look towards the upper right-hand corner of your screen. You will see a button that is labeled “Edit”. Tap on this button. You can now delete shortcuts by clicking on the red button that is located to the left of your active shortcuts. When you are done deleting shortcuts, click on the “Done” button. This button is located towards the upper right-hand corner of your screen.
