While it’s great that Apple updated the iMac with new hardware, and the iPhone 12 received the iPhone 4 treatment, there’s another product line that’s in sore need of an update. The MacBook Pro has been lambasted ever since Apple ditched the useful ports in favor of USB-C and Thunderbolt. But the days of those old designs may soon be in the rearview mirror.
Along with providing the model numbers for the Watch Series 7, the Eurasian Economic Commission revealed two new Mac model numbers (via Consomac). These come in as A2442 and A2485, and do not currently match up with any computer in Apple’s lineup.
Apple’s current offering of laptops, minus the 16-inch version, feature Apple’s M1 chip. However, there are two models that have not been updated at all. This is the aforementioned 16-inch model, along with the 13-inch MacBook Pro equipped with four Thunderbolt ports. So it’s easy to assume that these two models will fit the void.
M1X MacBook Pro
With rumors flying all over the place in regards to an updated MacBook Pro, these two models could be it. Considering the timing of this potential release, paired with Mark Gurman’s recent report, it’s likely that these MacBook Pro’s are sporting the unannounced M1X chip. This made its debut last year, as the company is in the process of transitioning from Intel to its own silicon.
The M1X is likely to offer around a 20% increase in performance over the current M1. This would line up with past processor upgrades, except for the move from Intel to Apple silicon. Not only is the M1X likely to offer better performance, but it’s also likely to be a bit more efficient. We could also see better graphical performance, and maybe, just maybe, we’ll be able to use external GPUs with M1X Macs.
We are expecting to see two new models of the MacBook Pro introduced, including a 14-inch model and 16-inch version. The 14-inch model would replace the current 13.3-inch variant, while the 16-inch would be a clean swap with the Intel version.
But perhaps even more exciting than the move to the M1X is the rumored redesign. Renders and leaks claim Apple is going to flatten the edges, stretch the display a bit with slimmer bezels, and add another port or two. While it’s unlikely that we’re going to see a return of the 2015 MacBook Pro, we are hoping to at least see an SD card slot and maybe a USB-A port or two.
This Fall is going to be a busy one for Apple. We are expecting the iPhone 13, Apple Watch Series 7, 2021 MacBook Pro, and maybe even the Mac mini to make debuts. There are even rumblings that the AirPods 3 are going to debut.
