Do Apple Watch 7 Screens Scratch Easily? Users Agree

By Madalina Dinita 20 comments Last updated May 11, 2022

The Apple Watch 7 is an amazing piece of technology. It comes with a big display, charges really fast, has a stylish design and is your perfect workout buddy. But, like all man-made things, it’s not perfect. Well, according to users’ reports, the Apple Watch 7 scratches more easily than expected. Many people have reported that simple actions such as putting your hands in your pockets could scratch your Apple Watch 7 screen.

Apple Watch 7: Extremely Durable but Not Scratch-Proof

Your Apple Watch 7 screen is not completely scratch-proof. While some models do hold up much better than others, the screen will scratch when it comes into contact with a hard surface. The Apple Watch 7 Aluminum models tend to scratch more frequently than their Stainless Steel and Titanium counterparts.

Apple proudly says that the Apple Watch 7 is “the most durable Apple Watch ever built“. While this model may be more crack-resistant, it seems that the trade-off is scratches.

However, don’t lose hope and take a closer look at your watch’s screen. If the scratch is really thin and barely visible, chances are it’s the oleophobic coating that got scratched and not the glass itself.

Use a Screen Protector From Day One

Apple Watch 7 models are very expensive. If you want to protect your device against micro-scratches, get a good screen protector as soon as possible. When you notice there are too many scratches on the screen protector, you can simply replace it with a new one.

Of course, adding a screen protector on top of a sapphire crystal display doesn’t appeal to everybody. But if you often wear your watch in an environment where there’s a high risk of getting the screen scratched or shattered, don’t hesitate to get a screen protector.

For example, granite countertops can scratch the glass of your watch pretty bad. Either use a screen protector or take off your watch when you’re in the kitchen.

No Warranty Coverage

If you’re still sitting on the fence and you’re not sure if you should really get a screen protector, maybe the following argument will convince you. Apple’s warranty doesn’t cover screen scratches as they’re considered merely cosmetic damage. If you want to replace a scratched or shattered Apple Watch screen, get ready to shell out hundreds of dollars.

How Do You Remove Scratches From Apple Watch 7?

Unfortunately, there’s no way to remove scratches from your Apple Watch 7’s screen. Don’t use Polywatch, toothpaste, or any other abrasive solutions, none of them work. On the contrary, they will remove your screen’s oleophobic coating, and you don’t want that.

As a workaround, you can use a screen protector to hide shallow scratches. The adhesive should fill in the scratches. However, they’ll become visible again after removing the screen protector.

The other option is to simply learn to live with screen scratches. They don’t usually affect your screen’s functionality, they’re just aesthetically unpleasant.

Conclusion

The glass on the Apple Watch 7’s screen is harder to crack but easier to scratch. That’s why you should get yourself a screen protector from day one and buy a Stainless Steel or Titanium model as they’re less prone to scratches. Apple’s warranty doesn’t cover screen scratches. Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do to remove scratches from your Apple Watch 7 screen.

Has your Apple Watch 7 already got a few scratches? Do you agree this model is indeed more prone to scratches? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

The Apple Watch Series 7 I got a few weeks back and I went to work the next day. While I was sitting I touched the wall so softly I can’t express the lightness of the touch and the screen chipped and put a cm crack in my new watch and now I’m going to have to spent 300 to 400 dollars to replace it all because of its cheap screen resistance

It’s crazy how easily my Apple watch 7 got 2 deep scratches and I don’t even know when it happened… All this after a few days of purchase

Used poly watch on my iwatch 7 and it did help with some deeper scratches, they are now slightly less obvious, and I am certainly glad I used it. Worth a purchase

I had a OG series 1 Apple watch for past 7 plus years, no visible scratches at all. I bought the watch 7 and in less than 2 days, already 2 small scratches. It appears that whatever this one is made of is no where NEAR as good as the original screen. It may be more durable (shatter proof), but dissappointing to have scratches on it already. I did reluctantly buy a screen protector and will see how that goes, but really didn’t expect the quality to be less in this new model.

I managed to wear an Apple Watch Series 3 for five years without scratching it. I’ve had a Series 7 for one month and it has what seems to be a pretty deep scratch near the top of the screen, and I don’t even remember hitting it on anything. Sheesh.

I love my watch but very disappointed in how easily the screen has scratched. I don’t wear it for gardening – only in the gym when cycling or at yoga. How come it’s scratched – within a few weeks of owning it – and without me being aware even of when it could have happened? Shame …

Day 1. I wear this watch and after doing nothing strenuous all day somehow by bed time there’s a HUGE ugly scratch down the middle. It makes a $400 watch look like a cheap piece of plastic, which I guess it is.

My 2 month old Apple watch series 7 has 3 scratches already from nothing worth noting! Why would I note simple things to cause a scratch as a watch is to be worn!!!!!!!!!! I am horrified at the appearance but more so that Apple doesn’t care. If they did, they would have innovated accordingly. A screen protector isn’t the answer as looks awful. I took out iCare for cracking but had no idea how bad scratches would look. For the extortionate price, this is unacceptable.

Absolutely spot on…my apple watch series 7 has numerous scratches and I’m so careful…it’s pretty frustrating. I wasn’t informed about a screen protector and Apple wants $350 to repair it.

Low quality watch is what it is. It scratches really easy and got a liquid glass protector. I am done with apple . We need a class action suite because ethos watch is unfit for its intended purpose

Really upset to find a substantial scratch on my Apple 7 watch shortly after purchase. Now I find out that, not cover this, but it seems that there are screen protectors that would have prevented this. Considering that neither the salesperson nor the company informed me that protectors were available and recommended purchase of same, I believe this to be negligence on Apple’s part. I will be pursuing compensation through Apple or, if this is not satisfactory, will follow up with Global TV’s Consumer Matters.

A friend has an older series – 5 or 6? and his watch crystal is very good. My series 7 watch is maybe 6 months old and has a haze on the round edge of the crystal and scratches. It looks like cheap plastic. I try not to look at it. Also very disappointed.

Not only is it more prone to scratches but it seems defective in that and the coding seems to have a bad adhesion across-the-board. The fact that warranty does not cover it is insane to me and Apple should recall and replace/repair these devices.
