What is the Apple Vision Pro?
Apple Vision Pro is designed to bring your digital world into your physical space. It allows you to arrange your apps anywhere and scale them to the perfect size, creating a workspace that is both immersive and flexible. This means you can browse the web in Safari, create a to-do list in Notes, chat in Messages, and seamlessly move between them with just a glance.
Apple Vision Pro is a culmination of decades of experience in designing high-performance, mobile, and wearable devices. It integrates advanced technology into an elegant, compact form, resulting in an amazing experience every time you put it on. The device features a singular piece of three-dimensional formed laminated glass that flows into an aluminum alloy frame, a Light Seal that flexes to conform to your face, and a Head Band that provides cushioning, breathability, and stretch.
Spatial experiences on Vision Pro are made possible through groundbreaking Apple technology. It features a custom micro-OLED display system, advanced Spatial Audio, a high-performance eye-tracking system, a sophisticated array of cameras and sensors, and a revolutionary dual-chip design featuring custom Apple silicon.
Can You Use Prescription Lenses with Apple Vision Pro?
The Apple Vision Pro does support the use of prescription lenses. However, it’s important to note that a valid prescription is required and not all prescriptions are supported. The vision correction accessories for the Apple Vision Pro are sold separately. For more detailed information, it’s recommended to consult with Apple’s customer service or visit an Apple retail store.
There were quite a few concerns about how much extra it was going to cost if you needed to fit the Vision Pro headset with prescription lenses. In its latest blog post, Apple surprised many, as it provided the following statement in regard to prescription lenses:
“ZEISS Optical Inserts — Readers will be available for $99 (U.S.), and ZEISS Optical Inserts — Prescription will be available for $149 (U.S.).”
Shortly after Apple made it possible to pre-order the Vision Pro, a new support document was published, providing more in-depth explanations regarding using the headset with vision prescriptions and vision conditions. According to Apple, you’ll need to order or purchase ZEISS Optical Inserts if you have one (or more) of the following:
- Prescription glasses
- Prescription contact lenses
- Over-the-counter reading glasses
- Prescription monovision contact lenses
- Diagnosed vision condition
However, Apple also points out that there’s a chance that your vision insurance provider may reimburse you for the cost of the ZEISS prescription Optical Inserts. This is just something you’ll need to follow up with your eye doctor or insurance company.
Built on the foundation of macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, visionOS is Apple’s first spatial operating system. It enables powerful spatial experiences and allows you to control Vision Pro with your eyes, hands, and voice.
In visionOS, apps can fill the space around you, beyond the boundaries of a display. They can be moved anywhere, scaled to the perfect size, react to the lighting in your room, and even cast shadows. This opens up a whole new world of possibilities for app developers and users alike.
One of the other concerns about the Apple Vision Pro comes down to accessibility within VisionOS. It’s well-documented how Apple excels at this with other Apple products, but because this is an entirely new product category, there are some reservations.
Apple attempted to satisfy those concerns, as there’s a section within the availability blog post that discusses what accessibility features will be available:
“Key accessibility features like VoiceOver, Zoom, Switch Control, Guided Access, and more have been reimagined for spatial computing. Users can interact with Apple Vision Pro entirely with their eyes, hands, or voice, or any combination that works best for them. They can select a preferred input method such as their eyes, finger, or wrist using Pointer Control, pause on an element of visionOS for a few seconds to simulate a tap using Dwell Control, or simply use voice commands for activities across Vision Pro using Voice Control. If input from both eyes is not an option, visionOS also allows eye tracking with one dominant eye.”
It will definitely be interesting to see whether Apple was able to deliver on this front, along with how well it works in the “real world.”
With Apple Vision Pro, any room can be transformed into your personal theater. It offers an immersive way to experience entertainment, expanding your movies, shows, and games up to the perfect size while making you feel like you’re part of the action with Spatial Audio. It delivers more pixels than a 4K TV for each eye, providing stunning content wherever you are.
It allows you to capture spatial photos and videos in 3D, and then relive those moments with immersive Spatial Audio. Your existing library of photos and videos can be viewed at a remarkable scale, and panoramas wrap around you, making you feel like you’re standing right where you took them.
Apple Vision Pro enhances the way you connect and collaborate with others. FaceTime video tiles are life-size, and as new people join, the call simply expands in your room. You can also use apps within FaceTime to collaborate with colleagues on the same documents simultaneously.
Powering the spatial experiences on Vision Pro is a unique dual-chip design. The powerful M2 chip simultaneously runs visionOS, executes advanced computer vision algorithms, and delivers stunning graphics, all with incredible efficiency. And the brand-new R1 chip is specifically dedicated to process input from the cameras, sensors, and microphones, streaming images to the displays within 12 milliseconds — for a virtually lag-free, real-time view of the world.
Apple Vision Pro features a custom micro-OLED display system with 23 million pixels, delivering stunning resolution and colors. This high-resolution display, which is the size of a postage stamp, delivers more pixels than a 4K TV to each eye, providing a truly immersive visual experience.
The device also features advanced Spatial Audio technology. Dual-driver audio pods positioned next to each ear deliver personalized sound while letting you hear what’s around you. Ambient Spatial Audio makes sounds feel like they’re coming from your surroundings. And with audio raytracing, Vision Pro analyzes your room’s acoustic properties — including the physical materials — to adapt and match the sound to your space.
In the press release announcing the availability information for the Vision Pro, Apple also revealed that for the “base” model, the Vision Pro will have 256GB of storage. This is the model that is priced at $3,499, but it’s unclear whether there will be other storage configurations made available. However, the way Apple phrased the following sentence leads us to believe you will have the ability to purchase a Vision Pro with more storage.
“Apple Vision Pro will be available starting at $3,499 (U.S.) with 256GB of storage.”
Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait and see what, if any, other storage configurations are made available, at least in an official capacity. The latest release of Xcode 15.2 might have tipped Apple’s hand a bit, as Vision Pro details surfaced.
Because Xcode 15.2 now supports visionOS app development, it was revealed that the Vision Pro will feature 16GB of RAM. This comes as little surprise given earlier reports, which also claimed that Apple could release a model of the Vision Pro with up to 1TB of storage.
In terms of performance, we still aren’t sure how well the Vision Pro will hold up to various tasks. However, given the popularity of the Meta Quest lineup of AR/VR headsets, we were hoping that Apple would at least allow for a little bit of gaming with its headset.
Thankfully, Apple is delivering, as the company states that you will be able to “access games on the App Store, including more than 250 titles on Apple Arcade.” The company goes on to say “Hit games like NBA 2K24 Arcade Edition and Sonic Dream Team can be played on a screen as large as they want with incredible audio and support for popular game controllers. New spatial games, including Game Room, What the Golf?, and Super Fruit Ninja, take advantage of the powerful capabilities of Apple Vision Pro to transform the space around players, offering unique and engaging gameplay experiences.”

Over 250 apps with native support for visionOS have been submitted, and Apple states that more than one million iPhone and iPad apps will be available for the headset at launch unless developers opt-out.
This is just a glimpse into the ever-expanding app universe of Apple Vision Pro. With new developers flocking to the platform and familiar names constantly adapting, the possibilities are truly boundless. So, strap on your Vision Pro, dive into the App Store, and get ready to discover a world of apps that not only support your digital life, but elevate it to a whole new dimension.
Vision Pro is equipped with a high-performance eye-tracking system of LEDs and infrared cameras that project invisible light patterns onto each eye. This advanced system provides ultra-precise input without your needing to hold any controllers, so you can accurately select elements just by looking at them.
The device also features a sophisticated sensor array. A pair of high-resolution cameras transmit over one billion pixels per second to the displays so you can see the world around you clearly. The system also helps deliver precise head and hand tracking and real-time 3D mapping, all while understanding your hand gestures from a wide range of positions.
Apple Vision Pro is powered by an external battery that supports up to 2 hours of use, and all-day use when plugged in. This ensures that you can use the device for extended periods without worrying about battery life.
The device also features speakers positioned close to your ears that deliver rich Spatial Audio while keeping you aware of your surroundings. This feature enhances the immersive experience, making you feel like you’re part of the action whether you’re watching a movie or playing a game.
When details about the Vision Pro were initially revealed at WWDC ’23, Apple stated that the AR/VR headset would last for up to two hours when plugged into the external battery pack. However, Apple recently updated the landing page for the Vision Pro, stating that the headset will now last for “up to 2.5 hours of video playback.”
For the most part, we have become accustomed to needing to purchase our own accessories whenever a new Apple device is released. There are a few exceptions, such as getting a band and charging cable in the box with an Apple Watch, and just a charging cable with an iPhone. While we expect Apple to offer a variety of first-party accessories, the company shared what’s included in the box, alongside the Vision Pro.
Apple Vision Pro comes with a Solo Knit Band and Dual Loop Band — giving users two options for the fit that works best for them. Apple Vision Pro also includes a Light Seal, two Light Seal Cushions, an Apple Vision Pro Cover for the front of the device, Polishing Cloth, Battery, USB-C Charge Cable, and USB-C Power Adapter.
It remains to be seen what other accessories might be released from Apple. Not to mention whether any third-party accessories could make an appearance, however, we aren’t expecting to see much from the likes of Incase or Belkin anytime soon.
The possibilities for what developers can create for Vision Pro are endless. With familiar tools and frameworks like Xcode, SwiftUI, RealityKit, and ARKit, as well as support for Unity and the new 3D-content preparation app Reality Composer Pro, developers have everything they need to create amazing spatial experiences.
During its announcement during the WWDC 2023 Keynote, Apple revealed that its first VR/AR headset will cost an eye-watering $3,499.
If you’ve been impatiently waiting for Apple to reveal when the Vision Pro headset will be available, the wait is finally over. Pre-orders for the Vision Pro will commence on Friday, January 19 at 5 a.m. PT, 8 a.m. ET. In true Apple fashion, you’ll have to wait just a bit longer to actually get your headset, as it will be officially released on February 2.
Unlike other Apple devices, this won’t be widely available across multiple retailers, at least not at launch. Instead, the only two avenues that you’ll have if you want to purchase a Vision Pro will be either from the Apple Store online, or you’ll need to go to a physical Apple Store location.
Need to Repair or Replace Apple Vision Pro?
Let’s face it, accidents happen. Whether it’s a clumsy tumble or a mysterious malfunction, a damaged Apple Vision Pro can put a serious strain on your productivity and peace of mind. But before you resign yourself to shelling out for a brand new pair, take a deep breath and explore your options.
Assessing the Damage:
- Start with the Obvious:Â Is the physical damage readily apparent? Cracks, chips, or deep scratches often warrant immediate repair or replacement, especially if they compromise the headset’s structural integrity or functionality.
- Listen for Trouble:Â Are you experiencing audio issues like crackling, popping, or complete sound dropout? This could indicate internal hardware damage requiring professional attention.
- Glitches and Lags:Â Does your Vision Pro exhibit erratic behavior like sudden disconnects, tracking problems, or unresponsive controls? These issues might be software-related and potentially fixable through troubleshooting or a simple firmware update.
Warranty and AppleCare+:
Apple offers a one-year limited warranty on the Apple Vision Pro, covering manufacturing defects and hardware malfunctions. If your issue falls under this warranty, repairs or replacements will be done free of charge.
AppleCare+ for Apple Vision Pro extends your coverage and provides additional benefits like:
- Unlimited incidents of accidental damage protection:Â Each incident comes with a service fee, but it’s often significantly less than the cost of outright replacement.
- Express Replacement Service:Â Get a replacement device quickly while your original unit is repaired.
- Technical Support:Â Apple’s expert technicians are always on hand to help diagnose and troubleshoot any issues you might encounter.
Repair or Replace?
The decision to repair or replace ultimately depends on the severity of the damage, your budget, and your personal preferences.
- Minor Issues:Â If you’re experiencing software glitches or minor cosmetic defects, repair might be the most cost-effective solution. Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASPs) can handle various repairs, often with quick turnaround times.
- Extensive Damage:Â For significant physical damage or major hardware malfunction, replacement might be the more viable option. AppleCare+ makes this process smoother, but even without it, you can purchase a replacement unit directly from Apple.
How Much Will It Cost?
The cost of repairing your Apple Vision Pro depends on the nature of the damage and whether your device is covered by warranty or AppleCare+. If your device is not covered, you might have to pay the full replacement value.
For out-of-warranty repairs, Apple has not yet published specific costs. However, it’s worth noting that the cost of AppleCare+ for the Vision Pro is $499 for two years, or $24.99 per month until you cancel. The deductible for accidental damage is $299, and for damage to included accessories, it’s $29.
Remember:
- Always back up your data:Â Before sending your Vision Pro for repair or replacement, ensure you’ve backed up any important data stored on the device.
- Compare your options:Â Weigh the cost of repair against the price of a replacement, factoring in any applicable warranties or AppleCare+ coverage.
- Seek professional help:Â If you’re unsure about the nature of the problem or the best course of action, consult Apple Support or an AASP for expert advice.
With careful assessment and informed decision-making, you can get your Apple Vision Pro back in top shape and keep enjoying its immersive audio experience.
