Meet Your New Camera

The front camera of the iPhone 17 comes with 18MP of photo power, regardless of the model. Compared to the 12MP of the iPhone 16, this is a huge leap forward in terms of image quality. However, what truly differentiates this camera from its predecessors is the extra technology involved.

No longer will you have to keep tilting to catch the right angle, or rotate your phone when friends join in on the shot or video call. This is thanks to an updated square sensor, which, unlike the old 4:3 ratio, features a much wider field of view making it easier to capture surroundings. Additionally, this camera can easily switch between portrait and landscape modes without the need for phone rotation.

Center Stage Takes Center Stage

Apple Center Stage isn’t exclusive to the iPhone 17; it’s also available on iPad and the latest Macs. Yet, even having this technology included on an iPhone just goes to show how powerful these smart devices have become.

So, what does Center Stage actually do?

Just as the name implies, the technology makes you (and your friends) the main focus and keeps the spotlight on you, no matter what. To that end, the technology makes it easy for the front camera to track you and keep as much information as you want in the frame. This includes:

  • Automatic rotation and zoom to better focus on the subject or subjects.
  • Angle and ratio adjustment, depending on how many people are in the shot.
  • Technology that keeps you centered no matter where you move in the shot.

Apple’s AI-assisted technology helps Center Stage work smart and keep the focus on you. This is especially useful if you are on a video call while on the go.

How to Use Center Stage on iPhone 17

Center Stage shows up in your Camera app as a small icon at the top of the screen, indicated by a figure surrounded by a square.

To use the feature in videos and selfies simply requires you to enable it , as you would for any other camera feature. To do this:

Step 1. Open the camera app.

Step 2. Press the camera chooser icon at the bottom-right of the screen to change to selfie mode.

Step 3. If the Center Stage icon is yellow, it’s already on. You can tap it to adjust its Settings, too. You can enable and disable Auto Zoom and Auto Rotate.

The same principle holds for videos. Center Stage is built into FaceTime by default, meaning you can take video calls with this feature enabled. To enable it while on a video call, you simply need to tap on the icon in the upper-right corner.
