Should You Buy the New Apple TV 4K 2022?

By Aaron Kim 0 comments Last updated December 29, 2022

Apple TV seems to be one of the company’s least popular products, as it seems as if Apple hasn’t really pushed the product that much compared to other mainstream staples. We’ve all heard of the iPhone, AirPods, and new Macbooks, but it’s rare to have people hyped up about a new Apple TV product. Despite that, Apple has continued to put in silent work on developing the product and ensuring that the platform receives new titles that people want to watch. If you don’t have a physical Apple TV, you can still watch certain shows on the platform via your browser or iOS and macOS devices. For those that are interested in what the new Apple TV 4K 2022 has to offer, read on below to find out more.

What’s Changed With the New Apple TV 4K 2022?

Apple TV 4K 2022 Severance

You may wonder what possible changes Apple could make to the new Apple TV 4K 2022 that would entice more people to purchase the hardware. It’s true that Apple TV isn’t popular not because of the hardware but because of the content available on the platform. If Apple used its capital and industry power to entice more production houses to produce top-quality shows and movies exclusively for the platform (like Amazon Prime Video has been pushing for a while now), then perhaps more users would purchase the hardware, too.

The new Apple TV 4K 2022 is the third generation of the product and comes with:

  • A15 Bionic chip – 50% faster CPU performance and 30% faster GPU performance compared to the 2nd Generation.
  • 4GB memory – 33% more capacity
  • Fanless design and passive cooling
  • 1.2-inch height – slimmer than previous generations
  • 208g weight – 50% reduction
  • Gigabit Ethernet port available with the 128GB model
  • Two storage options: 64GB or 128GB
  • New generation Siri remote included

So as far as specs go, there are definitely some improvements, but is that enough to justify purchasing one?

Should You Buy the New Apple TV 4K 2022?

When you analyze the new Apple TV 4K 2022 specs, you can see there are some definite improvements compared to previous generations. But the main issue we have is that these changes don’t particularly swing the needle to encourage people to go out of their way to purchase the new generation Apple TV. The main question Apple should aim to answer is: why would customers purchase an Apple TV when they could watch Netflix or Amazon Prime Video without any hardware? As it stands, if you want to stream Apple TV content on a TV instead of a computer or smartphone/table, you’ll need an Apple TV device or a smart TV that supports Apple TV. Many people want to stream TV shows on a big screen, but not many people want to purchase a new piece of hardware to do that.

We believe that unless the Apple TV product line undergoes a drastic change, it will never surpass other streaming platforms. The key reason is that other platforms have better content without the need to purchase extra hardware. We understand that Apple specializes in minimal designs and user experience, but Apple TV only provides a minimal design (a little black box) with not much else. Why would anyone pay $129 – $149 for a small black box that doesn’t provide customers with much value?

In our opinion, the new Apple TV 4K 2022 is not worth purchasing, unfortunately. If the streaming platform adds quality content and the hardware includes more innovative features, then we see our opinion changing really quickly. Apple TV has so much room to provide more for customers, but it simply doesn’t. Until then, we would say don’t purchase this product.
