AppleCare: Device Is Not Eligible for Additional Coverage

By Madalina Dinita 4 comments Last updated December 29, 2022

When you try to purchase AppleCare for your device, you may sometimes get a strange alert in red that reads: “This device is not eligible for additional coverage“. As the pop-up message clearly indicates, your device is ineligible for AppleCare. Let’s explore what’s preventing you from finding an AppleCare plan for your device.

My Device Is Not Eligible for Additional AppleCare Coverage

Check if This is a Known Issue

Go to Apple’s System Status page and check if AppleCare is affected by any known issues. If AppleCare on Device is not available, wait until Apple’s engineers have solved the problem on their end, and try again later.

Meanwhile, you can try to purchase AppleCare using a different channel. For example, if you can’t activate the plan directly on your device, go to AppleCare’s website or visit the nearest Apple Store.

AppleCare or AppleCare+

Check what kind of warranty you’re trying to purchase. Keep in mind that you can purchase AppleCare+ within 60 days of your device purchase. The only exception is Japan, where you only have 30 days to get AppleCare+.

So, if you bought your device more than 60 days ago, don’t be surprised if you can’t get AppleCare+. On the other hand, you have 12 months to get the AppleCare Protection Plan starting from the original purchase date.

Third-Party Purchased Items

If you bought your Apple device from a third-party vendor (your carrier, Walmart, BestBuy, Amazon, you name it), you may need to wait for a day or two before you can activate AppleCare. Apple may need some time to update the AppleCare database.

Wait for a couple of hours after the initial activation, and try again later. If you’re still getting the same alert, wait for 24 hours.

Contact Apple Support

If you’re still unable to purchase AppleCare, contact Apple Support for further help. Let them know you’re getting an error message that says your device is not eligible for additional coverage. Make sure you have your receipt at hand when contacting support.

Maybe Apple doesn’t have the correct purchase date in the system. The good news is that you should be able to fix that over the phone.

Conclusion

If Apple says your device is not eligible for additional AppleCare coverage, check if there are any known issues with the AppleCare service. Then, check your purchase date. You have 60 days to purchase AppleCare+ and 12 months to get AppleCare. If you bought your device from a third-party vendor, wait for a day or two. If you’re still unable to activate AppleCare, contact Apple Support.

Did you manage to solve the problem and activate AppleCare? Which solution worked for you? Let us know in the comments below.

I’ve been trying to get Apple care on all my account phones and even went to Apple Store to get diagnostic tests on all 5 phones. They said I was good to go and purchase. We got our phones in January this year and have run out of people to talk to. When I tried it tells me ineligible, so what can I do to get Apple care for the 2 years the store told me I could get?

My iphone isn’t a year old and is still under limited warranty. I was not informed I had 60 days to purchase AppleCare+ when I purchased the phone at the Verizon store. We purchased FOUR BRAND NEW PHONES in November of last year. I WANT APPLECARE+ FOR ALL FOUR.
We keep our phones in immaculate condition and got trade-ins for our old phones. Is there anyone or any way to appeal to receive Applecare+ on these phones from date of purchase? I am not asking for a brand new plan, it can be effective last November. Please advise.
