Everything We Know About iPhone 14

By Andrew Myrick 0 comments Last updated January 18, 2022

It’s only been a few months since the iPhone 13 was unveiled, but that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from churning in regards to the iPhone 14. While Apple’s next iPhone is not yet in production, the company is likely working on the final details for the next couple of months. Today, we’re taking a look at all of the rumors that have been shared in regards to the iPhone 14 and how the phone is shaping up to change the world, again.

iPhone 14: Design and Notch

After seeing a successful return to the days of the iPhone 4 design, it seems that Apple is going to stick with this design. This means that the iPhone 14 will offer flat edges, along with the same button layout and cutouts for speakers and the charging port.

One area where iPhone users have been clamoring for a change is in the notch. With the iPhone 13, Apple slightly reduced the size of the notch, but not enough to really make much of a difference compared to the iPhone 12. According to a series of recent leaks, it appears that Apple could finally be ready to ditch the notch altogether.

In its place, we would have a “hole + pill” design, similar to what was found on those older iPhone models. This would remove the notch entirely, giving users more even more screen real estate to work with. Hopefully, this would also mean the return of the battery percentage to the status bar, but we’ll have to wait and see.

There are conflicting reports about whether Apple will be bringing ProMotion to the non-Pro iPhone 14 models. ProMotion finally arrived on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, offering a variable refresh rate to make your iPhone look even smoother while using it. But ProMotion also works wonders with battery life, as your screen isn’t trying to refresh as many frames when something stagnant is on the display.

Not that it matters all that much, since Apple does an incredible job when it comes to software, but we aren’t expecting much to change in the spec department. Originally leaks and rumors suggested that Apple was going to be putting more RAM in the iPhone 14 models. However, due to the ongoing supply chain issues, this does not seem to be the case.

According to one analyst, all iPhone 14 models will feature 6GB of RAM. This is the same amount found in the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max. However, it marks a 2GB increase for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max.

The amount of storage included with the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max is also expected to change. With the iPhone 13 Pro models, Apple offers base storage of 128GB, while the iPhone 13 and 13 mini are equipped with 64GB. It seems that the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will be bumped up to 256GB of storage, but the standard models will remain at 64GB.

After seeing less-than-stellar sales numbers for the iPhone 12 mini, some were surprised to see Apple come back with an iPhone 13 mini. Analysts posited this was only because the 13 mini was already in the pipeline, and it didn’t make sense for Apple to cancel it altogether. However, it would appear as some big changes are in store for the iPhone 14 lineup.

There will not be an “iPhone 14 mini”, as Apple will remove this option entirely. This will open the door for a potential new iPhone SE model to make waves with a lower price point and smaller form-factor. But rumors point to Apple keeping a total of four phones in its iPhone 14 lineup.

The iPhone 14 would be the new entry-level model, followed by an “iPhone 14 Max” along with the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max models. This new iPhone 14 Max would feature the same screen size as the Pro Max, without all of the bells and whistles. It is said to feature a 6.7-inch OLED display, complete with the same 2778 x 1284 resolution.

As you could surmise, Apple will debut its next processor with the iPhone 14 series. All four models will be powered by Apple’s new A16 Bionic chip, providing the same level of performance across all four models.

For the past few years, Apple has stuck to the tried and true method of using 12MP camera sensors in the iPhone. If recent rumors are to be believed, the iPhone 14 could change all of that.

Apple does a pretty good job at providing an excellent camera experience with its devices, despite Android phones using larger sensors. The gap could be closed with the iPhone 14, as Apple is expected to use an improved ultra-wide lens.

There are also rumors that suggest the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will use a 48MP wide-angle (primary) camera. Not only would this vastly improve the quality of images, but it also introduces the ability to record 8K video. Some have claimed that the iPhone 14 Pro models will still be able to snap 12MP photos, using a method known as pixel-binning. Essentially, the 48MP image would be “pixel-binned” to 12MP for low-light photos, allowing for more details to be preserved in low-light situations.

iPhone 14: Pricing and Release Date

It’s a bit early to try and guess when Apple would unveil the iPhone 14 model, as it’s still early in the iPhone 13’s lifecycle. However, if Apple follows its schedule from 2021, the iPhone 14 lineup could debut in September 2022. Additionally, pricing information has yet to be leaked, however, we expect pricing to follow the same guidelines as the iPhone 13 series.
