  • The number on the Messages app icon represents the number of unread messages.

Contents

  • Message Icons on the Home Screen
  • Message Icons That Show Upon Swiping a Chat
  • Icons When You Open a Message Thread

Message Icons on the Home Screen

  1. Three-dot icon: This icon at the top-right corner opens menu. Tap on it to select messages or edit pinned messages.
  2. Pencil icon: Tap this icon to compose a new message.
  3. Chats at the top: These are the pinned chats and will stay there even if a new message comes.
  4. Blue dot next to text messages: This indicates that you have one or more unread messages in that chat. Open the chat to get rid of the blue dot.
  5. Crossed-out bell icon: This icon means that alerts are disabled for this chat. You will not be notified of new messages from this chat. Long-press on the chat thread and select Show Alerts to eliminate this.

Message Icons That Show Upon Swiping a Chat

When you swipe left or right on a chat thread on the home screen of the Messages app, these icons show up:

  • Message bubble with a dot (on the right swipe): Tap this icon to mark the message thread as unread.
  • Message bubble with a checkmark (On the right swipe): Use this icon to mark the message thread as read.
  • Crossed-out bell icon (on left swipe): This icon lets you hide alerts for the chat.
  • Bell icon (on left swipe): This icon will appear if alerts are disabled. Tap it to enable alerts.
  • Trashcan icon (on left swipe): Tap this icon to delete the entire message thread.

Icons When You Open a Message Thread

  1. Video Camera/Camcorder: Tap this icon to initiate a FaceTime audio or video call, depending on your selected option.
  2. Plus icon (+): Tap this icon to show the Messages menu, where you will see apps like Photos, Digital Touch, Audio, etc. Long-press this icon to open the Photos app. Know how to add more apps in Messages.
  3. Microphone: Tap this icon to dictate your message. That is, your speech will be converted into text without actually typing.
  4. Two exclamation or question marks on a message: This is an emoji reaction to the message. You can react to any message by holding it. Then, select the preferred emoji. Know how to add special effects to messages on iPhone.
  5. Red exclamation mark: This icon indicates that the message was not sent.

on my text function, when I try to initiate the page, all I see are moving green icons with the letter A in them, roaming in no particular pattern, and then disappearing. What’s going on? Thanks for your help.
