macOS: Fix “You do not have permission to open the application”

By Michelle Honeyager 0 comments Last updated May 6, 2022

Apple has noted that people may see an error when trying to use their scanner with Image Capture, Preview or Printers & Scanners Preferences. This is a permission error that reads “You do not have permission to open the application” which then lists the name of your scanner driver.

Further, the message reads to contact your computer or network administrator for assistance and tells you that your Mac failed to open a connection to the device.

How to Fix the Scanner Permission Error

Since Apple knows that this is an issue, the official advice from Apple is to install the latest macOS for updates to resolve the issue, as an update has fixed the issue. This error was logged on September 22, 2021, so it’s a fairly recent issue.

The issue is affecting users on different versions of macOS Big Sur. The error was fixed in macOS 11.6.

Some people may not want to update at this time. However, Apple had previously posted a temporary workaround for the issue:

  1. Force quit any apps that are open by selecting the apple icon at the top left of the screen and selecting Force Quit Finder.

2. A menu will allow you to quit all apps one by one. Select the app and then hit Force Quit. Close the window once everything is closed besides Finder.

3. Select Go in the menu of the Finder at the top left of the screen. Select Go To Folder.

4. Type in /Library/Image Capture/Devices

5. Hit Go.

6. Now you can select the scanner the error message tells you that you don’t have permission to in the menu, which is the name of your scanner driver. Double click it. Nothing should happen.

7. Close the Devices window and then use the app you were using to scan. It should work normally. If you use another app to scan, you will have to repeat the process for that scanner, too.

If you do not choose to update at this time, you should consider updating soon as a more permanent fix to this issue.
