Many people prefer using Apple’s Keynote for slideshow presentations over Microsoft’s PowerPoint. This tool creates more polished presentations, allows for smoother media imports, and has better chart capabilities. However, despite these benefits, PowerPoint is still used more frequently – especially in organizations. And while Keynote can easily open – and even edit – PowerPoint files, PowerPoint can’t do the same with Keynote files. That’s why this guide will teach you how to convert Keynote file to PowerPoint.

What to Know Before You Convert Keynote File to PowerPoint
If your slideshow presentation will be played on a Windows PC, you have no choice but to convert it to a .ppt or .pptx file. However, there are a few things you should know about the end product of this conversion before you go through with it. Otherwise, you might create a stunning presentation on your Mac, only to find that many elements don’t look – or work – as intended.
Generally speaking, any features unique to Keynote won’t transfer well to PowerPoint. This applies to Apple-produced fonts, unique animations and transitions, and Keynote templates.
With fonts, PowerPoint will just replace them with a font of its own. The only way to keep the same font is to use one installed on both tools.
It’s similar with animations and transitions. Some might get replaced, while others might not work altogether. If possible, you should test your Keynote presentation on PowerPoint to see how everything functions.
If you’re adamant about keeping everything as-is, your only option might be to save the Keynote presentation as a movie, not a PowerPoint file. This way, you can also keep the original Keynote template. Otherwise, the formatting of your presentation will likely be all over the place when played on a Windows PC.
How to Convert Keynote to PowerPoint on a Mac
If you know your slideshow presentation will be viewed on Windows, you can export it as a .pptx file right in the Keynote app.
Step 1: Click on the “File” tab at the top of your screen.
Step 2: Go to the “Export To” option.
Step 3: Select “PowerPoint…” from the available options.
Now, you can hit “Save” right away. However, you can also tweak a few more things before you do so.
If your presentation is confidential, you can password-protect it in Step 4.
Step 4: Check the “Require password to open” box and enter your password.
Step 5: Hit the “Save” button.
Step 6: Name your presentation in the “Save As” text field. Don’t add any extensions to the name – they will be added automatically.
Step 7: Click on “Export” to save your presentation.
And that’s it. Your Keynote presentation is now a PowerPoint file.
