What to Do if Your Apple ID Has Been Locked for Security Reasons

Unlock Your iPhone and Change Your Password

First things first, you need to unlock your device and change your password in order to regain full access to your device. To unlock your device, you can use two-factor authentication, a recovery key, or the iForgot service.

Change your account password, and check if you’re still getting security warnings and alerts. Make sure the new password doesn’t have anything in common with your old password. You need to set up a completely new password.

Keep in mind that too many unsuccessful login attempts will get your account locked. As a quick reminder, your Apple ID locks automatically if you or someone else enters the wrong password, security questions, or other account information.

Enable 2-Factor Authentication

If you haven’t enabled 2-Factor Authentication, don’t be surprised if your Apple ID gets locked for security reasons out of the blue. Set up 2FA and check if the security alerts persist.

On your iOS device, navigate to Settings, select your name, and then tap Password & Security. Tap Turn On Two-Factor Authentication to enable the option.Turn-On-Two-Factor-Authentication-iPhone

On your MacBook, click on the Apple menu, and go to System Preferences. Then, click on your Apple ID, and go to Password & Security. Locate the Two-Faction Authentication option and turn it on.

Disable Your VPN

If you’re using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) on one of the devices associated with your Apple ID, disable the program. If the security alerts persist, uninstall your VPN and restart all your iOS and macOS devices. Hopefully, this quick workaround does the trick for you.

Manage Your Apple ID

Open a new browser tab, go to appleid.apple.com and navigate to Manage my Apple ID. Manage your account and the devices associated with it. First of all, update your trusted phone numbers and devices. Then, update your Apple ID email address, country, or region, if necessary. Restart your devices, and check if you notice any improvements.

Check if One of Your Devices Is Causing This Issue

Shut down all non-essential Apple devices. Then, log out of your account on your main devices. Wait for 30 seconds to completely reset your connection to Apple’s servers. Log back into your account, and check the results. If the issue persists, contact Apple Support.

Conclusion

If your Apple ID has been locked for security reasons, unlock your device using two-factor authentication, a recovery key, or the iForgot service. Then, change your password. Enable 2-Factor Authentication if you’re not using the option already. Additionally, disable your VPN, shut down all your non-essential Apple devices, log out of your account on your main devices, and then log back in.
