How to use Dictation: The New iPad (3rd generation)

April 4, 2012

iPad

One of the new features of the new iPad is Dictation that lets you dictate text instead of typing. For instance you use your voice to dictate an email message. To use dictation:

Tap Settings > General > Keyboard > Dictation then turn on dictation. Then simply tap:New Ipad Dictate then dictate.

Important:

  • Our experience is that this feature does not always work.
  • Dictation requires a Wi-Fi connection. Make sure that your iPad is connected to the Internet because you are sending your data to Apple servers.
  • Dictation is available in the following languages:

English (Australia)

English (United Kingdom)

English (United States)

French

German

Japanese (Japan)

  • If dictation does not work, make sure that the keyboard is set for the language you are using (Settings > General > Keyboard).

It worked without a hitch on my iPod Touch. Not sure how a microphone would factor into this app. Does it?
