The default iPhone keyboard is designed to be accessible and useful for as many people as possible. However, for various reasons, you might like to switch things up and change the default keyboard on iPhone to a different layout – like when you’re typing in another language.
This guide shows you how to add new keyboards and change between them.

How to Change Your Default Keyboard on iPhone Using Built-in Options
You don’t necessarily need to download any extra software or packages to change the default keyboard on iPhone, as it comes with dozens of options built in for many foreign languages. Here’s how to add new keyboards to replace or supplement the default layout.
Step 1. Go to the “Settings” app.
Step 2. Tap on “General,” and then “Keyboard.”
Step 3. Tap “Keyboards” to see a list of all keyboards currently enabled on your device. If you haven’t added any previously, the default keyboard will be visible as the only option.
Step 4. Press “Add New Keyboard” and scroll through the list of available keyboards to find the one you want.
Step 5. Tap on the keyboard you want to add. That’ll take you back to the “Keyboards” menu, where you can repeat the process to add more keyboards.
Step 6. To set a new keyboard as your default, tap the “Edit” button on the “Keyboards” menu. Then tap and hold on the three lines icon next to the keyboard you want to set as default and move it manually to the top of the list.
Step 7. Tap “Done” when you’re finished adding and editing your keyboards.
How to Change Your Default Keyboard on iPhone Using Third-Party Keyboards
There are also third-party keyboards you can download and install, and these may work a little differently from the foreign language layouts. Here’s how to set them up:
Step 1. Go to the App Store and search for the keyboard you want to add. You can just type in “keyboard” and look at the options if you’re not sure which one you want.
Step 2. Download the app file associated with your keyboard.
Step 3. You may then be able to open the app and set up the keyboard by following the on-screen instructions. But, if that doesn’t work, you can still change to your new keyboard by first going to “Settings.”
Step 4. Go to “General” and then “Keyboard.”
Step 5. Tap on “Keyboards” and “Add New Keyboard.”
Step 6. Look through the list and find the keyboard you want to add under the “Third Party Keyboards” section. Tap to activate it.
Step 7. Back on the “Keyboards” menu, press “Edit.”
Step 8. Tap and hold the three-line icon next to your new keyboard, and drag it to the top to change it to the default option.
How to Switch Between Keyboards on iPhone
If you’ve set up multiple keyboards on your iPhone – like a U.S. English one and a Spanish one, for example – you can easily switch between them on the fly while typing messages. To do this, hit the “Globe” icon on your keyboard. Tap it to scroll between your full list of keyboards, or long-press on it to see a pop-up menu with all your active keyboard options.
As an avid gamer, I’ve run into my fair share of error codes and weird faults that have forced me to find fixes to problems I never anticipated. That gave me a passion for sharing those fixes with others so we can all game without feeling like our hardware is rebelling against us.
