There are certain file types that are specific to certain operating systems, like Sketch files, used in the Mac-exclusive graphic design app, Sketch. While most of the time you’ll only encounter Sketch files on Macs, there may be cases when you need to open one on Windows – like if a Mac-using friend or colleague sends one to you.
You can’t download the Sketch app on Windows, nor is there any direct equivalent that works with Sketch files. However, there are still ways to work with Sketch files on Windows PCs and laptops. Let’s see how to open Sketch files on Windows with a list of proven solutions.

How to Open Sketch Files on Windows with Lunacy
Step 1. Go to the official download page for Lunacy, a downloadable design app that works with Sketch files and runs on Windows.
Step 2. Click the “Get it from Microsoft” button and click to open the Microsoft Store, if prompted. That’ll take you directly to the Store page for Lunacy. Note that you can also just open the Store from your Start menu and search for Lunacy. Click the “Get” button to download and install the app.
Step 3. Once the download is done, click to launch Lunacy.
Step 4. Click “File” and then “Open” to access your files, and find the Sketch file you wish to open. You can also use the “Ctrl” and “O” shortcut to get to the same menu.
Step 5. Find your Sketch file and double click to open it in Lunacy. You can now view your file, but you can also make changes to it, export it, upload it to the cloud, and save in other suitable formats if needed.
Note that with Lunacy and the other solutions listed above, there can sometimes be compatibility issues opening certain Sketch files. If your file is corrupted or especially large or complex, Windows or web-based apps may have a hard time opening it. If you’re having a hard time with the original file, it’s best to ask the creator or sender to send another copy or a simplified version.
