How to Move the Address Bar Back to the Top of Safari on iOS 15

By Nelson Aguilar 1 comment Last updated October 8, 2021

Apple moved Safari’s address/tab bar to the bottom of the page with the release of iOS 15 this year. The change is meant to make it easier for you to navigate your iPhone with one hand, allowing you to hit the address bar with your thumb so that you don’t have to stretch your fingers to the top of your device, but not everyone loves the new move.

Many find the address bar move jarring, because they’re used to the address bar being at the top of the page, or simply annoying, because it’s easy to now accidentally tap on the tab bar when you’re scrolling. Fortunately, Apple makes it incredibly simple to revert to the traditional address bar at the top of Safari.

Move the Safari Address Bar Back to the Top

Moving the address bar from the bottom of Safari back to the top of the page is incredibly easy:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down to Safari.
  3. Select the Single Tab option under Tabs.

Underneath these settings, you’ll also see options to toggle on Landscape Tab Bar, to prevent the search bar from minimizing as you swipe up and down, as well as Allow Website Tinting, which changes the color of Safari’s interface as you browse. While these settings are useful for changing how you use Safari, they can be left as-is when it comes to moving the address bar.

Once Single Tab is selected, you can head over to Safari to view the moved address bar, which will now be at the top of the page (right) instead of at the bottom (left).

Additionally, you can move the address bar directly in Safari, which is faster but doesn’t show the other tab-related settings. On any webpage, tap on the aA icon on the left of the address bar, to bring up more settings, and then tap on Show Top Tab Bar. The address bar will automatically move to the top of the page. If you want to switch back, do the same thing but this time you’ll see Show Bottom Tab Bar.

Conclusion

How do you feel about the new address bar placement in Safari on iOS 15? Do you think it’s better at the bottom of the page or do you prefer the tab bar at the top like with older versions of iOS? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Prefer top of page on both iPad and iPhone. Especially since I also use Windows PC.
