You know it isn’t a problem with the card — you’ve been using it to buy stuff all week — it must be your Apple ID. So why is iTunes or the App Store saying your payment method was declined? And how do you fix it?
Many users have reported issues in which iTunes or the App Store decline their debit or credit cards. Sometimes this happens with a new card, other times it’s a payment method you’ve always used. It’s so frustrating!
Without a valid payment method, you can’t buy music, movies, apps, books, or iCloud storage from Apple. You can’t pay for your Apple Music subscription and some users can’t even download free apps!
Well, we’re here to show you how to fix it.
Use these quick tips to fix iTunes or the App Store declining your payment method:
- Update your Apple ID payment information.
- Check your Purchase History for unpaid purchases.
- Add a new payment method to use.
- Sign out of iTunes and the App Store, then sign in again.
- Contact your bank.
- Contact Apple.

Problems when your iTunes or App Store payment method is declined

When your payment method doesn’t work in iTunes or the App Store, you might get any of the following error messages:
- Apple payment has been declined please check the error.
- Your credit card was declined please enter valid credit card information.
- There is a billing problem with a previous purchase. Please edit your billing info to correct the problem.
- There is a billing problem with a previous purchase. Click Purchase History to view and correct the problem. If you cancel you will not be able to buy until this billing issue has been resolved.
You can fix all these problems. To do so, just use the steps we’ve laid out below.
1. Update your Apple ID payment information

The first thing to do is check that your payment information for iTunes and the App Store is up-to-date. Something could have changed recently if you moved or got a new bank card.
But even if you didn’t, it’s worth making sure everything is accurate.
So grab your payment card and double-check all the details on it.
How do I update payment information on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod?
- Go to Settings > iTunes & App Store.
- Tap on your Apple ID, then tap View Apple ID.
- Enter your Apple ID password if prompted.
- Tap Manage Payments.
- Update the Card Number, Expiry Date, CVV, and Billing details.
- Tap Done in the top right.
How do I update payment information on a Mac or PC?
- Open iTunes on your computer.
- From the menu bar, go to Account > View My Account…
- Enter your Apple ID password if prompted.
- Under Apple ID Summary, click Manage Payments.
- Click Edit next to your payment method.
- Update the Card Number, Expiry Date, CVV, and Billing details.
- Click Done in the bottom right.
Don’t ignore the Billing Address
Many users have their payment card declined because the billing address doesn’t match what’s on file at their bank.
Make sure you double check the billing address on your Apple ID payment method. Check the name, street address, and phone number are consistent with your bank account.
Some users discovered their ZIP code had “+4” on the end of it with their bank, but not with their Apple ID. Or vice versa.
This small difference was the reason their payment method got declined!
Are you in the right location?

Payment problems often occur if there’s a mismatch between your billing address, App Store, and actual location.
Sometimes this causes problems for travelers. Other times it’s the result of using a VPN on your device.
Disable your VPN or update your payment methods so everything is from the same country or region.
2. Check your Purchase History for unpaid purchases

You can’t update apps or purchase content from iTunes and the App Store if there are unpaid purchases on your account. This happens if you made a purchase and then the payment method was declined.
iTunes and the App Store verify your account at the moment you make a purchase, but they often don’t take the money until a few days later.
This could mean there are pending purchases you thought you’d already paid for.
How do I check my Purchase History on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod?
- Go to Settings > iTunes & App Store.
- Tap on your Apple ID, then tap View Apple ID.
- Enter your Apple ID password if prompted.
- Scroll down and tap on Purchase History.
- Unpaid purchases are listed under Pending.
How do I check my Purchase History on a Mac or PC?
- Open iTunes on your computer.
- From the menu bar, go to Account > View My Account…
- Enter your Apple ID password if prompted.
- Scroll down to Purchase History and click See All.
- Unpaid purchases are listed under Pending.

One of the reasons your payment method may have been declined by iTunes or the App Store is because you don’t have enough balance to cover the purchase.
This can happen if there are unexpected or unauthorized purchases on your account.
If you see any questionable items in your purchase history, tap the arrow or click More. This gives you a more detailed breakdown of the purchase, along with the option to Report a Problem to Apple.
How do I stop family members making purchases on my account?
When you use Family Sharing, purchases made by any family member come off the Family Organizer’s payment method. This can lead to a lot of unexpected purchases.
But you can restrict those purchases by turning on Ask to Buy for family members:
- Go to Settings > [Your Name] > Family Sharing.
- Tap the relevant family member’s name (they must be under 18).
- Tap Ask to Buy.
When this family member tries to make another purchase, your devices will ask for authorization first. You cannot turn on Ask to Buy for adult family members.
3. Add a new payment method to use

It’s possible there’s a problem with the particular payment method you’re trying to use. Perhaps your card has expired, your account has been blocked, or that payment method isn’t available in your region.
Try using an alternative payment method, such as PayPal. If your original payment method was a debit card, switch to a credit card instead. Or vice versa.
Should none of your options work, try putting credit on your Apple ID account with an Apple Gift Card.
How do I add a new payment method on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod?
- Go to Settings > iTunes & App Store.
- Tap on your Apple ID, then tap View Apple ID.
- Enter your Apple ID password if prompted.
- Tap Manage Payments, then tap Add Payment Method.
- Choose the method you want to add and enter the details below.
- When finished, tap Done in the top right.
How do I add a new payment method on a Mac or PC?
- Open iTunes on your computer.
- From the menu bar, go to Account > View My Account…
- Enter your Apple ID password if prompted.
- Under Apple ID Summary, click Manage Payments.
- Click Add Payment.
- Choose the method you want to add and enter the details.
- Click Done in the bottom right.
Change the order of your payment methods
If there are multiple payment methods on your account, iTunes or the App Store attempts billing them from top to bottom. Return to the Manage Payments screen and re-order your payment methods to put your desired method at the top.
Apple Credit is always at the very top of the list. And it’s always the first payment method iTunes or the App Store takes money from.
But you can choose the order your payment methods are after that.
4. Sign out of iTunes and the App Store, then sign in again

There could be a software problem with your particular device that is causing your payment methods to be declined in iTunes or the App Store.
To fix it, sign out of everything and restart your device. Then sign back in again.
How do I sign out of iTunes and the App Store on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod?
- Go to Settings > iTunes & App Store.
- Tap on your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
How do I sign out of iTunes and the App Store on a Mac or PC?
- Open iTunes on your computer.
- From the menu bar, go to Account > Sign Out.
- On a Mac: Open the App Store. From the menu bar, go to Store > Sign Out.
5. Contact your bank

Okay, it’s time to start looking at your bank. Start by checking your balance — is there enough to cover all the pending purchases on your account?
If not, that is probably why your payment method was declined.
Even if everything on your bank account looks okay, give your bank’s customer service line a call and explain the situation to them. Tell them you’re trying to make a purchase on iTunes or the App Store and let them know how much it should cost.
Some banks automatically decline small purchases of less than $5. But if this is the case you can normally ask them to change that restriction for your account.
6. Contact Apple

And finally, visit Apple’s Get Support website to raise this problem with them. Explain that you’ve already tried multiple payment methods and contacted your bank, but nothing has worked.
Hopefully they can work out why your payment method is being declined for iTunes or the App Store. And they should be able to fix it, too.
Let us know in the comments at the bottom of the page what they say.
FAQs
Credit cards, billing addresses, pending payments, and all the rest. This is complex stuff and we certainly haven’t covered everything.
If you’ve still got burning questions, hopefully you can find the answers in the FAQs below.
Why does Apple keep saying my payment method was declined on iTunes and the App Store?
If you aren’t trying to buy or download anything, but Apple still keeps saying your payment method was declined it means there’s probably a pending purchase on your account.
Follow our instructions above to take a look at your iTunes and App Store Purchase History. If you see any Pending purchases you know what’s going on.
Update your payment information and pay for your purchase to stop getting messages.
Why does it say invalid payment method on iTunes or the App Store?
There are a couple of reasons this could be happening: the payment information entered could be incorrect, or the payment method selected might be unavailable for your region.
Check out Apple’s website to see what payment methods are available to your region. This relates to the specific iTunes or App Store you’re trying to access — not necessarily the region you’re currently in.
Then follow our instructions above to update your payment information. Take extra care on the card number, expiry date, and CVV to make sure everything is correct.
How do I fix a declined payment on my iPhone?
iTunes or the App Store might decline payment on your iPhone for a number of different reasons. Perhaps the payment details are wrong, the method isn’t available in your region, or you don’t have enough money in your account.
Our guide to fixing declined iTunes and App Store payments includes specific instructions for iPhone users. Check it out at the top of this post, and let us know how you get on in the comments below.
How do I fix the error, “This payment cannot be processed at this time please try again later?”
Check your payment details for iTunes and the App Store — perhaps the credit or debit card information is incorrect. Be sure to check your billing address matches the records of your bank as well.
If that doesn’t help, try contacting your bank directly. There could be a block on your account if they suspect this is a fraudulent transaction.
And finally, take a look on Apple’s website to see if iTunes or the App Store are down. If there’s anything other than a green circle next to them, the problem is at Apple’s end.
Why can’t I update my payment information on iTunes?
Make sure your Apple ID password is correct, otherwise you can’t edit account information in iTunes. Also, try restarting iTunes or removing and reinstalling it from your computer.
Follow our instructions above if you don’t know where to find payment information in iTunes.
How do I find out why my payment method is invalid or declined?
You can find out why your payment was invalid or declined when you update the information on your account. Look for red text highlighting errors. Review these sections carefully to ensure they are correct.
We explained how to update your payment information above, for any device. If there isn’t any red text, make sure your billing address and name are exactly the same as the account with your bank.
If that didn’t help, contact your bank or Apple to see if they can provide more information.

Let us know your own questions in the comments so we can keep this FAQ updated. By now we hope your payment method works and you’re too busy using it to think about posting a comment anyway!

I didn’t have enough money in my account last month when the direct debit was due. It came out of my account a day or 2 later when my pay went in. I keep getting messages in my settings to update my card details. The details are correct but this message is constantly there. How can I fix this?
I’m unable to update my new credit card number at this time. My Visa card was compromised and Visa today contacted me and canceled the old card. A new card has been issued with a new number but it may take a week to receive it. Until then I just can’t give the new information. I’m hoping you’ll retry the payment in about a week and if not please let me know how to square up.
I just need my mobile credit card app

My credit card company told me that Apple does not send correct transactional data for the authentication to the credit card company. Therefore the request is declined by the credit card company.
Apple has to fix this “bug” in the transactional data they are sending to the credit card company. As long as Apple does not send correct data sets this issue will remain.
Card keeps getting declined , there are funds in account and details are correct …. How do I fix this ?
I live in the Netherlands. Those who don’t want a credit card, we have a system called “Ideal”. This means, if you chose this type of payment, you click on the Ideal button. Open your bank account, and confirm. Like millions, I use it for almost all online purchases. It works perfect, Apple had this method also. So if you want to add your credit, via your account, you can fill exactly how much you want to add, and automatically you will be directed to your bank. More than once I tried today, the money is taken out my account, but is not to be found in my credit. I remember sometime ago, I had no problem. What so amazing, that the smallest company’s here, to even the bigger ones, never give any delay or any kind of problem. It’s also the most safest way, for both party’s. If I search the internet, concerning these problems, Apple has this error for a long time now, and many complaints are to be found. It’s a disgrace, such a leading world wide company.
my card is declined for the pass days, kindly help
My iphone keeps declining the payment method. I have enough fund in my account and the bank also said that my card is valid. I contacted apple support and they said there is no problem at their end. The bank also said the same thing. But it’s not working. What should i do?
For some reason my card is not being accepted. It keeps saying “Update Payment Details”. It doesn’t recognize it even though it is a VISA Card.
How can I clear up my declined Apple Pay method and use it again…..
I am trying to add a credit card & remove an old one. I keep getting a message saying my new card has already been added. When I try to remove the old card, it says I have to have a card on file for an active subscription. HELP
I had an interesting problem, I only had one card and I don’t have another card to add, when it said failed it wouldn’t let me update the card info, wouldn’t let me delete the payment method, or tell it to rerun it.
Essentially I got locked out!
What I ended up doing was adding funds to Apple ID under the account settings page in the amount I wanted for the declined subscription purchase and *poof* it realized the payment method was valid again.
Visa being declined on iTunes account. Info provided is all correct
When I put my debit card information in it keeps telling me that my card is declined and it won’t say why. My card is valid and I don’t owe anything on my account
I cannot download from the App Store because I kept getting “INVALID PAYMENT METHOD”Your payment method Was Declined. Please Enter Valid payment Information.
I have enough money in my account and the card is also valid.
But what I realized is that I also do not have the option to choose none in the billing information.
My credit card declined. I called my bank there is no problem every month I have this problem but it always clears up this time 12 hrs and it still is no good
My credit card was declined and I’m pretty sure my payment info was correct
What do I do?
Didi, Your best bet is to reach out to Apple Support and they should be able to help you with this one.
My credit card was declined to open a new account so I can watch Apple TV I was on the phone with customer service for 45 minutes we tried everything everything everything and finally at the end it was declined saying I had too many attempts some things just do not work and this is one of them
Had a message from Apple to say payment been declined ?
“Your Credit Card Was Declined. Please Enter Valid Credit Card Information” for create iTunes id.
What am i do?
Hi Sandip,
Log into iTunes and update your payment information. It’s likely that your credit card on file has some incorrect information, like phone number, email, address, expiration date, and so forth.
If you verify all your CC information is accurate, try to make another small purchase in the iTunes Store. If still declined, call your credit card company and find out if they are declining charges from Apple. If so, ask why and how you can get that CC to accept charges like iTunes purchases.
SK
I have a valid debit card and iTunes keeps saying invalid card, I can’t find that I owe anything in my subscriptions which is free trial for Apple Music for one more month and an already paid subscription. Iv even updated my iPhone 5s, Iv had iPhone as a diehard apple fan since 2009 and I think I’m about to stop being a fan, Iv owned over 10 iPhones, several new 0 owner phones, meaning I bought them from apple, and even a hardly used mini tablet. So how about a fix apple? Not hard to do- just remove whatever to fuc* you did that causes this issue and reinstall the option for no card!!!!!!! The FCC may have a blast with this one should it somehow cross the desk of an vp’s desk or even the P of FCC??? Anyone agree?
This is a bunch Can’t even download free apps or do a simple update!! Why in the hell do u need my credit card in order to update my phone or get a free app. I’m seriously about to drop being an apple customer. This is seriously uncalled for . I’m surprised it didn’t ask for my credit info to send this .
So bloody angry! I’m having the exact same problem with mine & my mothers phone. Not to mention AUSTRALIA IS NOT EVEN AN OPTION in our phones anymore?! What’s going on apple? Such a disappointment, always something.
I’ve had my visa debit on here for about a year now and now I’ve updated to iOS 10 it’s saying it’s invalid!
I attempted to pay my annual iCloud storage fee for over 2 weeks unsuccessfully before I got this resolved. In my case, iTunes would not accept payment with a DEBIT card (note: my Debit card DOES have the Visa logo on it and has been successfully run as both a debit and credit card transaction with other vendors)
Interestingly enough when I called Apple Support, both representatives had no knowledge of this issue – despite there being multiple links online to those who have voiced their frustrations.
Once I input my actual CREDIT card info, iTunes accepted this card and I was subsequently able to re-upgrade (they had taken my storage level back down to 5Gb due to “non-payment”) back up to 200Gb.
Hope this helps.
Same problem here.. What should i do?
My MasterCard was stolen and my bank blocked it and issued a new one. Unfortunately I dint get to change that on my Apple ID and my son applied to buy talking Tom whose payment is still. Pending, and whose functions are yet to get to my phone. I want to clear that bill with my reissued card but payment method is declined. My apps can’t update either and once I prompt to update an app like whatsup which is free I get blocked from it till my payment method is accepted. I need to update iOS but am afraid this will block my phone too. What to do???

I’m having the same issue with my card! Idk what’s going on! It’s really making me mad!
Problem all fixed now 🙂
I’m experiencing this problem now too :(. Got a free trial on Spotify, and it expired on 15 July, which is fine, but it’s paid through Apple, and I can’t go back to free, which is frustrating! I also bought a weight loss app for £4.99, but no problems with that. I removed Facebook to re-establish lost connection, now I can’t download it again, even though it’s free. Phoning the customer support when it opens, really frustrated now x

same problem, i bought an itunes card loaded my device with credit and now cant use it or even download free apps anymore. Once my current apps need updating i wont even be able to use them anymore. I need to get a new tablet provider because apple sucks, now I just have three expensive paper weights.
Remove the need for a credit card! That feature sucks & it’s causing people major problems!
Hi,
Same issue here, nil issues until today, same card, still valid, no it says I owe 1.99 for an app I purchased. Plenty of cash on my card and still decline. I’m in Australia. I brought ipad for kids. I hate apple tactics now I can’t even access free apps. The paid app says it took my cash in my bank account. Ah apple couldn’t organise a r**t in a brothel with a fist full of hundreds. Their dictatorship is gonna come down hard on them. Get head out of butt apple.
Screw apple ….. Never ever got this kind of BS when using Andriod devices I’m regretting listening to my son and buying him iPad mini when there are loads of Droid devices with the same screen size and better spec’s.. It’s a bran new iPad mini and I can’t use it .. what a totall rip off!!
Please tell me someone has a solution for the credit card being declined issue. I’ve got money in my account and its still happening. All I want is a free app and its not letting me download it. Apple sucks.
Same here, I Came to apple after some years of over using android, people keep telling me how good apple is and what not, so I bought the new ipad… I must tell you that I am big disappointed, I can’t download any music that been legal or illegal, I can’t buy anything that I want because of this mistake. Apple has a big name but all it does is trap their customers in custody in a big monopoly game… I’m seriously considering selling my ipad and return to a new big android tablet where I have the freedom to customize it detail by detail to my likes and hear the music that I want when I want.
I have an android tablet and I am getting the same message after months of using the same card with no problems. I tend to think it may be our bank refusing to pay debits under $5 as someone stated. I don’t think it matters what the device is, if payment is being processed for an apple app.
I had problems using a prepaid debit card on my iTunes account and my App Store for free apps. If you’ve got a negative balance on your card or zero balance, it will not allow you to download apps, whether free or not.
I have the same problem…all of suddent the credit card was declined, try to change with others also didn’t work…. Somebody from apple should contact me soon….or anybody know the support from apple? I’ve been using apple since 2009 without any problem, but today is really bad….
Apple should put FAQ related this issue…

@Natalie, Open the iTunes store (make sure your not logged-in to any account), search for a free app (Say…Twitter app) > download the app > iTunes will prompt you to “Sign in” or “Create an account” > Go ahead and create a new account [Notice iTunes will give you an option of “None” in the credit card details > Complete the registration > verify your account….. your free iTunes Account!
It happen. thanks.
i have the same problem with my card. What I should to do in this case
It’s because the bank declined it bc it’s under a 5$ purchase. Call your bank and tell them to unblock apple from accessing it info and walla 🙂
Same credit card account for quite some time, same Apple or Itunes account for multiple years. No it gives me problems. No matter what the problem, they need to work it out, they’re missing money.
Whatever the reason, +4 zip, IP localization, multiple phones, Apple should post a solution in their customer service section, or provide a phone number for support and resolution. We have all bought into this “Think Different” line of BS, and now we’re trapped. Divesting from all Apple products and switching has a very high cost, since iTunes is the only way in, there should be adequate support. We are expats, living overseas, and the degree of difficulty of resolving anything is extremely high and frustrating. Microsoft was accused of creating a trade monopoly and has had to defend itself for years, but their alleged violations of free market principles, seem like nothing compared to this.
I’ve read it’s due to IP geolocation. Apple are legally only allowed to distribute based on zone so travellers are finding this denied issue more and more. However, I’m not a traveller, have always had a UK credit card entered and used the UK localisation in Itunes and now I’m getting it. I’ve spent £100’s in there, which I guess will be going to Amazon or other etailers now. Definitely not renewing my contract with the iphone either – tired of this walled garden and big brother tactic of telling me what I can put on the phone I paid a fortune for. You’d think Apple’d have the sense to see what happened to AOL and Compuserve before them for their walled garden approach.
I’m getting the same error “Your credit card was declined please enter a valid credit card”. We’ve tried 3 different cards to create our itunes account and ALL cards gave us the same error. So frustrating! Anyone know of a solution??
(apmg646@hotmail.com)
Hey, my problem is when i try to use my credit card; ,it responds as “Yor credit card was declined please enter a valid credit card info.” Even when i try to get a account for a free app without credit card i am failing. I just bought an iPod touch 4G to play some games but now i m stuck with it. Such a shame for a company like Apple.
Same problem here. Today, suddenly, after updating iTunes I was asked to again agree to the terms and conditions. After that my account didn’t work and it’s the SAME account I’ve used for YEARS continuously. Edkroket may be right on the multiple login thing. I’m on laptop #2 now and my laptop #1 is sitting in another location, on the internet and logged into the same iTunes account I’m using on #2 now. As soon as I can get to laptop #1 again I’ll test this theory. All I know is that if I could get hold of an Apple rep right now I’d totally JUNK PUNCH him…
We just bought iphone 4s and can’t even get free apps for them because itunes won’t accept our money. This is why we hesitated to do anything with Apple. It’s always a hassle and it always seems like they are trying to prevent us from using their products or using our purchased content the way we want. I’ll just buy our content from Amazon now and if we can’t get apps soon, we’ll switch to a Droid phone. What a rotten way to treat customers!
This happened to friends of mine. They had two iPhones but were using the same iTunes account to buy stuff. If both phones were logged in with iTunes at the same time (this can changed in settings), any credit card would automatically be denied. The solution was to make sure only one phone was logged in at a time. I suppose you could create two separate accounts but you might end up paying twice for the same app.
I am unable to verify my credit card. I have used more than one and all giving me the same message. Really don’t know what to do anymore!!! Please help (samerv@gmail.com)
I found out that itunes was “placing money in a hold status” using the credit card it kept claiming was invalid. It did this everytime I clicked on submit credit card info. I had several one time charge/hold payments for a $1.99 app I was trying to purchase. My bank called me three times to verify that my card wasn’t stolen.
Ater a few days of confusion, I ended up buying an itunes gift card and removing all of my credit card info. I always keep an available balance for purchases and have had no problems ever since.
If I buy a iTunes card will it take the balance of that?
My credit card or my paypal works…what up who can you call Thanks
Mine has the +4 on my CC account and my Apple account and still no luck
I’m having the same problem, but my credit card company says they don’t support zip+4 in the zip field. Now what do I do.
I had this problem last week and when I contacted my bank they said it was because the address associated with my credit card didn’t have the plus 4 on the zip code. Apple had recently started matching zip+4 in their verification. My bank added that information to my credit card account and iTunes was happy.
