You might want to change the name of your Mac, either because you have a new user or you just want a new name. Your computer’s name and local hostname also allow your computer to be identified on the local network. You also use it for other purposes, like transferring files through AirDrop. Read on to learn how to change your computer’s name.
How to Change the Computer Name on a Mac
To change the computer name:
- Click the Apple icon on the top left of the screen.
- Select System Preferences.
- Click on Sharing.
- You’ll see your computer name at the top.
- You can click the computer name directly and edit it by typing in a new name. That will change the computer name and hostname.
- If you just wish to change just the hostname, click the edit button.
- You can click on the local hostname to change that alone.
- There is also a checkbox option for using the dynamic global hostname. If you check that and follow the prompts, you can give your Mac a global DNS hostname so other computers outside your local network can know the computer by name.
- Hit ok.
For newer Macs using Ventura, you may have to access these areas by selecting the Apple menu > Systems Settings > General (on the sidebar) > Sharing.
