iPhone, iPad or iPod Doesn’t Show Up in iTunes

Several users have reported an issue in which iOS devices (iPhone, iPad and iPod) do not appear in the left-hand device pane in iTunes 9.2.x. Consequently, the user cannot sync or otherwise interact with the device.

Fixes

Mac

Update to iTunes 9.2.1. Available http://www.apple.com/itunes/.

Reinstall Apple Mobile Device Service. As described in this knowledge base article.

Windows

Update to iTunes 9.2.1. Available http://www.apple.com/itunes/.

Turn off Wi-Fi. Oddly, some users have found that turning off Wi-Fi in the Windows Control Panel allows iOS devices to be recognized.

Update drivers. Perform the following steps:

  1. Connect the iPhone, iPad or iPod to the computer
  2. Click the Start button, then right-click “My Computer” and choose “Properties”
  3. Go to Hardware > Device Manager > Imaging Devices
  4. Right-click “Apple Mobile” and choose “Update driver”
  5. Choose “Advance Mode” then enter into the search box: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
  6. Click “Next” and perform the update

Delete iTunes application data. Remove the following file and put it in a safe location: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes then restart your computer.

This advice isn’t working for me- I have windows vista and cannot find a way to get the pc to recognise the iPhone as an apple device – it thinks it is a digital still camera and won’t let ne select the correct driver!

I have ran into this problem after switching to a new imac. The new iTunes didn’t see neither my iPad nor my iPhone 4. I have followed the steps, reinstalling itunes and the mobile device drivers, which solved my problem….. until I shut down the computer, and restarted it. Same problem again. I guess I can solve it again by reinstalling everything, but I’m not going to do this each time I turn my computer off ! Hopefully iTunes upgrade will solve this problem, it’s really annoying. Any idea is welcome :)

Meline, I have the same problem. I just bought the new iMac and neither my iPad nor iPhone can be recognised by iTunes. I have been trying to fix this problem for about 2 hours now without success.
