AirPlay Icon Missing from iPad, iPhone or iPod touch; Fix

December 31, 2010

How-to

Some users have reported an issue in which the AirPlay icon (for streaming music and video to AirPort Express base stations and Apple TVs) is suddenly missing from various apps on iPod touch, iPad or iPhone.

There’s a simple fix for this issue, as follows:

On your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, navigate to Settings > General > International > Language and change to a different language (e.g. if you are using English, switch to French). The device will go through a language switch/reset process, and your AirPlay icon should be restored.

Next navigate back to Settings > General > International > Language (translated into the new language, of course) and switch back to your original language.

Fantastic. Worked for me. I lost the airplay after pairing with a Bluetooth speaker. Hmm. I’d been torturing my iPad and my poor brain trying to get my “real” speakers back. Thanks so much!

one more note, good idea to change it to language you can at least semi-understand in order to navigate back again. Also, I noticed that my safari “search” was the charming “recherché” even after I had swapped the international setting back to english. I had to delete the french keyboard that had been created in the iPad settings.

just a reminder to make sure your wifi is on :-O

sounds obvious ya. but, i just got two iphones for my wife and myself. unbeknownst to me my wife turned off her wifi because it kept autoconnecting at her office (ya, i know you can disable that but she didnt)…and, she didnt want the IT guys watching her traffic.

fast forward home and i can’t figure out why my airplay works fine and hers doesnt.

had to soft-reboot the phone after turning on wifi and it works fine.

David..our Ipods were not working as well. Updated both Apple TV and Ipods today. There is now a section on Apply TV under setting once you do this, and airplay has to be turned on for the icon on the Touch to work. Try this?

Newest iPad. No AirPlay icon. This fix did not work. Further research has not resulted in a solution. Steve passes away, and apple falls apart.. Frustrating.
