Can’t Download and Install Apple Watch Update? How-to Fix

By Andrew Myrick 0 comments Last updated July 28, 2022

For as wonderful and amazing as the Apple Watch is, there are still a few frustrating pain points that you might have to deal with from time to time. One of these is if you can’t download and install Apple Watch update. Unlike every other Apple device, there’s no physical plug located on the Apple Watch, forcing you to rely on transmitting information wirelessly between your Watch and iPhone.

How to Delete Apple Watch Software Update Directly From Watch

Most of the time, this isn’t really much of a problem, but there are times when you might need to download an update only to find yourself unable to do so. One example is when you try installing the watchOS Developer Beta. We’ve run into issues where the software update claimed it was installed, only to find out that when the next update arrives that you can’t install it.

In the event this happens to you, not all hope is lost. Here’s how to delete Apple Watch software directly:

  1. Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll down and tap Usage.
  4. Locate and select Software Update.
  5. Tap Delete.
  6. Tap Delete to confirm that you want to remove the software update.

The software update may take a few moments to be deleted. But once that’s finished, you’ll be able to download and install the watchOS update on your Apple Watch again without issue.

How to Delete Apple Watch Software Update Directly From iPhone

As you might expect, you can also delete any downloaded Apple Watch software updates right from your iPhone. This might be the better option for those who are experiencing issues with their Apple Watch or just prefer to manage everything from their iPhone. Here’s how you can do so:

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. In the bottom toolbar, tap My Watch.
  3. Tap General.
  4. Scroll down and tap Usage.
  5. Under the Storage section, tap Software Update.
  6. Beneath the listed software version, tap Delete.
  7. Tap Delete in the dialog box that appears.

Deleting the watchOS software update from your iPhone may result in the data taking a bit longer to be deleted from your Apple Watch. This is just because your iPhone needs to communicate the information to your Watch before it’s actually deleted.

Try To Download and Install Apple Watch Update Again

Once you’ve removed the “old” or problematic software update, you can try and go through the steps to download and install the update again. Here’s how you can do so from your iPhone:

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. In the bottom toolbar, tap My Watch.
  3. Tap General.
  4. Tap Software Update.
  5. Wait for the update to appear.
  6. Tap the Download and Install button.

Make sure that your Apple Watch has at least a 50% charge and is connected to a charger throughout the process. You’ll also need to make sure that your iPhone stays within a few feet of the Apple Watch just to avoid any potential problems that may arise.
