How to Set up Sleep Schedules on iPhone

By Andrew Myrick 0 comments Last updated August 10, 2022

One of the most difficult things to manage on a daily basis for many people is getting to bed with enough time to actually rest. Sleeping habits are extremely important, as they can directly and adversely affect your overall health. This is true even for those who monitor their eating habits and work out when possible. Our smartphones are already capable of handling a lot of different health and fitness tracking, so it made perfect sense when Apple implemented the ability to set up Sleep Schedules on iPhone.

How to Set up Sleep Schedules on iPhone

Essentially, when you set up Sleep Schedules on iPhone, this is a way for your iPhone to help make sure you get to bed when you need to. But there are some other features implemented into Sleep Schedules and sleep tracking that aim to help you put your phone away and get some shut eye. And if you’ve never set up Sleep Schedules on iPhone before, you’ll even be prompted to set up a Sleep Focus mode, so you won’t find yourself distracted. Here’s how you can get started:

  1. Open the Health app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Browse in the bottom right corner.
  3. Scroll down until you see Sleep and select it.
  4. If this is your first time setting up a Sleep Schedule, tap the Get Started button in the Set Up Sleep window.
  5. Drag the slider to create a Sleep Goal.
  6. Under Alarm Options, tap the toggle next to Wake Up Alarm.
  7. Customize the Sounds & Haptics.
  8. Toggle whether you want Snooze to be enabled.
  9. Tap Next in the top right corner.
  10. Follow the on-screen steps to create a Sleep Focus mode, if you want to. You can also skip this entirely if you don’t want to create a Sleep Focus mode.

As you would expect, this creates a Sleep Schedule that will automatically prompt you when it’s time to start winding down. A notification appears letting you know how long you have before it’s bedtime, which also nudges you to start any of your “Wind Down” routines.

How to Edit Sleep Schedules on iPhone

Whether it’s because of a new job, or just because you want to try to change things up, Apple makes it possible for you to edit Sleep Schedules that you already set up. This is great in that you won’t need to create a new schedule whenever something changes, and are able to just modify the existing schedule.

  1. Open the Health app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Browse in the bottom right corner.
  3. Scroll down until you see Sleep and select it.
  4. From the Sleep landing page, scroll down until you reach the Your Schedule section.
  5. Tap Full Schedule & Options.
  6. Under the Full Schedule section, tap the Edit button.
  7. Adjust your sleep schedule based on the following sections:
    1. Days Active
    2. Bedtime and Wake Up
    3. Alarm Options
  8. Tap Done in the top right corner.
  9. There’s also an option to Delete Schedule at the bottom of the Edit Your Schedule window.

When it comes to editing your Sleep Schedules, you don’t have to completely overhaul the entire schedule if you just need to wake up earlier one day out of the week. Here’s how you can edit your “Next” sleep schedule:

  1. Open the Health app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Browse in the bottom right corner.
  3. Scroll down until you see Sleep and select it.
  4. From the Sleep landing page, scroll down until you reach the Your Schedule section.
  5. Tap Edit beneath the Next section.
  6. Follow the on-screen steps to make changes for your Next scheduled alarm.

Once the edits are saved, only the next event in your sleep schedule will be changed. From there, the rest of your Sleep Schedule will remain untouched, so you can get back to normal.

Add a Window Down time, change your Sleep Goal, and more

Surprisingly, Apple has implemented quite a few options when it comes to those who want to set up Sleep Schedules on iPhone. These include being able to set up a “Wind Down” period of time, which nudges you to wrap up what you’re doing, so you can get a good night’s rest. You also have the ability to change your Sleep Goal, which can come in handy if you’re making changes to the length of your nightly sleep schedule.

  6. Scroll down until you reach the Additional Details section.
  7. Go through the following list of option and make any necessary changes or tap the toggle to enable features:
    1. Wind Down
    2. Sleep Goal
    3. Track Time in Bed with iPhone (Toggle)
    4. Sleep Reminders (Toggle)
    5. Sleep Results (Toggle)

When you’re done making all of the necessary changes, simply tap the < Sleep button in the top left corner to go back to the last page in the Health app. From there, you have successfully set up Sleep Schedules on iPhone, and can go through making any adjustments depending on your needs.
