How to Update AirPods Pro 2

By Andrew Myrick 0 comments Last updated September 29, 2022

It’s been a long three years since Apple first introduced the AirPods Pro, as these were initially released back in October of 2019. Since then, the headphone market has been flooded with alternative options that attempt to provide the same great experience that Apple’s earbuds offer. Unfortunately, while some of those other earbuds have come close, nothing matches the seamless integration between earbuds and the rest of Apple’s ecosystem.

With the AirPods Pro 2, one of Apple’s most popular and successful products has been finally updated. These earbuds bring improved ANC and Transparency modes, along with incredible battery life and a slightly-redesigned charging case that is packed with features of its own. But if you’re running into issues with either your AirPods Pro 2 or the included charging case, you might need to check for (and install) an update.

How to Update AirPods Pro 2

Unlike the other Apple devices, actually updating the software is a bit of a nuisance. This is because Apple doesn’t offer a “check for updates” screen when it comes to the AirPods. Instead, you’ll need to follow these steps:

  1. Ensure that your AirPods Pro 2 are paired and connected to your iPhone.
  2. Listen to music for up to one minute.
  3. Place the AirPods Pro 2 back into the charging case.
  4. Connect the charging case to power via the Lightning port or on a wireless charger.
  5. Charge your AirPods Pro 2 for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Open the case lid and make sure that your AirPods Pro 2 are again connected to your iPhone.
  7. Leave the lid of the charging case open to ensure that the AirPods are connected to your iPhone.
  8. Wait.

If an update is available, it will be automatically downloaded and transferred to your AirPods Pro 2. In order to ensure that you are running the latest firmware available, there are a couple of steps to take. The first of which is to check Apple’s AirPods Firmware Updates page, which provides more information, along with the latest firmware versions for each model of AirPods.

Once you have checked to see what the latest firmware version number is, you’ll need to jump back over to your iPhone. With your AirPods Pro 2 connected to your iPhone, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the name of your AirPods Pro 2 at the top of the page.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page until you reach the About section.
  4. Make sure that the firmware matches with the results provided on Apple’s Firmware Updates for AirPods page.

While Apple has made it easier to access the settings for your connected AirPods Pro 2, you can still go through the “old” method for checking the firmware version number.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Bluetooth.
  3. Under My Devices, tap the More Info button on the right side of your AirPods Pro 2.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page until you reach the About section.
  5. Make sure that the firmware matches with the results provided on Apple’s Firmware Updates for AirPods page.

Unfortunately, Apple has yet to provide any option to “force” the update to be installed on any of the different AirPods models. There is a way around this if you are inclined to install beta firmware, but this could result in your AirPods malfunctioning and is not recommended.
