What Is NameDrop?

NameDrop is a feature that will allow you to share your phone number and other contact details via AirDrop. To use it, you simply need to move your iPhone closer to someone else with an iOS device.

To use NameDrop, both users will need to have iOS 17 downloaded. If your device doesn’t support iOS 17, you’ll either need to upgrade your iPhone to a newer model or continue sharing contact details in the same way that you previously did.

How to Use NameDrop

Now that you know more about what NameDrop is, we’ll show you how to use the feature. You will first need to download iOS 17 when it’s released by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

Bluetooth and your iPhone’s Wi-Fi feature will also need to be switched on. You can do both of these from the Control Center.

After doing all of the above, follow the instructions in the two subsections below.

Switching On AirDrop

Before using NameDrop in iOS 17, you have to turn on AirDrop for everyone. You can do this by following these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app and select the General tab.
  2. Click on AirDrop.
  3. Change your settings to Everyone for 10 Minutes.

Sharing Your Contact Details

After turning on AirDrop on your iPhone, and ensuring that the other user has done likewise, you can share your contact details by doing the following.

  1. Move your iPhone right next to the other person’s device.
  2. Wait for your contact cards to appear on each other’s iPhone.
  3. Click on the option to share your contact details.

In addition to using your iPhone, you can share contact details with Apple Watch users as well. The process works exactly the same.

Share Your Contact Details Much More Easily With NameDrop

NameDrop is an incredibly useful feature coming to iOS 17, and it’ll make sharing contact details with other iPhone users much simpler than before. Instead of having to type the other person’s information and getting them to call you, you can simply bring your devices next to each other and choose what you’d like to share.

Now that you’ve read this guide, you’re ready to start using NameDrop when Apple’s new software comes onto the market. Remember that the other person needs an iPhone with iOS 17, and they’ll also need to have their AirDrop settings switched on. Alternatively, they can use the feature on their Apple Watch instead.
