If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod only shows the Apple logo or switches between a black screen and the Apple logo, it’s likely your device is stuck in a boot loop. Many users also discover that their iPhone keeps on resetting or rebooting itself a number of times every few minutes or so. This problem starts happening once folks update their iPhones to the latest iOS. During the install process, the device freezes and remains that way. When they try to reboot it and it goes into a continuous boot loop and the Apple logo appears, stays for a while, disappears, and then comes back on-screen.
So if after updating to the latest iOS version for your device, your iPhone or iPad keeps restarting randomly, take a look at these tips to get your device back in action!

Your best bets for boot loops: Restart or Update with iTunes or Finder
Most of the time, a simple restart or a forced restart solves this problem. So before you spend hours trying to fix it, perform this basic step.
How to restarts or force restart an iPhone, iPad, or iPod
- Restart–power off, wait for 20+ seconds, power back on
- Force Restart
- On an iPhone 6S or below plus all iPads with home button & iPod Touches, press Home and Power at the same time until you see the Apple logo
- For iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold both the Side and Volume Down buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo
- On an iPhone 8 and above model or iPad without a home button: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Then press and promptly release the Volume Down button. Finally, press and hold the Side or top button until you see the Apple logo, then release all buttons
How to update with iTunes or Finder
When we update our iPhones, iPads, and iPods using Software Update in the Settings app, we are actually only updating the code changes. Over-the-air updates like this do not install full, clean versions of iOS or iPadOS.
For that reason, when we see issues like boot loops, we recommend connecting your device to iTunes (for macOS Mojave and below and Windows) or Finder (macOS Catalina and above) and try updating using a computer.
When you update with Finder or iTunes, Apple installs a full version of iOS and iPadOS onto your device, including all the code changes as well as anything that remained unchanged. So with iTunes or Finder, your device gets a fresh iOS or iPadOS version.
How to update via iTunes or Finder
- Connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer with iTunes installed or use Finder for macOS Catalina+
- Open iTunes or Finder
- Select your device (look under Locations in Finder)
- Tap the button to Check for Update
- If an update is available, click the option to Download and Update
- Enter your device passcode, if asked

Clean the charging port on your iDevice
First, remove any case before you examine and clean any port on your iPhone or another device. Then, closely examine the Lightning or USB-C charging port on the bottom of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod.
If you see any dirt, dust, or debris inside the port, give it a good cleaning following the tips in this article iPhone Not Charging? Lightning Port Problems?
Remove the SIM card and re-seat it
Sometimes the SIM card is not sitting properly in the SIM tray. So checking to make sure it has a proper fit is a good idea.
- Power off your device
- Use a paperclip or a SIM removal tool to access the SIM card tray
- Remove the card and tray and reseat the SIM into the tray
- Push the tray back into the slot
- Power the iPhone back on
Or remove Your SIM card temporarily
-
- Use a paper clip or the tray ejector pin that came with your iPhone and remove your SIM card from the SIM tray
- Then, with SIM removed, power up your iPhone and see if removing the SIM solved the resetting issue
- Reseat the SIM in the tray and put the card back into your phone and power up. See if the resetting loop returns or stays away
- If the resetting loop continues to be a problem, contact carrier regarding a possible SIM card replacement
Use Recovery Mode in iTunes or Finder (works best if you back up your data)
- Connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to your computer
- While it’s connected, perform a forced restart for your device type but continue to hold the power button (do not release it)
- Maintain pressing the Power button when the Apple logo appears
- When you see the Connect to iTunes or Finder on the screen, release the power button
- On the computer, look for a message about your device in recovery mode
- Try Updating first using the Update button
- If updating fails, run through these steps again and this time select the Restore button
Factory reset your iPhone iPad, or iPod and then restore from a recent backup
A factory reset erases all your device’s data and settings and then installs the latest version of iOS or iPadOS. If possible, make a backup before resetting or have a backup available via iCloud, iTunes, or Finder.
- Open iTunes or Finder
- Connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod
- If a message asks for your device passcode or to Trust This Computer, follow the steps to trust
- Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod
- Choose Restore
- In the verification message, tap Restore again to confirm
- Once confirmed, iTunes or Finder erases your device and installs the latest iOS or iPadOS
- After your device restores to factory settings, it restarts
- Set it up as new or connect to your recent backup
For a deeper dive into restoring an iDevice, check out this article with step-by-step instructions and images.
Does your iPhone, iPad, or iPod keep resetting but allows temporary access to your apps and home screen?
Update apps using the App Store
Sometimes it’s an app that’s causing the problem. Updating the app so it mirrors your iOS or iPadOS version often does the trick.
- Tap the App Store app
- For iOS 13 and iPadOS and above, tap your profile icon and choose to Update All
- For iOS 12 and below, tap the Updates tab at the bottom and update your apps
Change the Date on your iPhone. Tap on Settings > General > Date & Time
- Disable the ‘Set Automatically’ feature and manually set up a time for a date that was in the past
- Restart your device
- Once you resolve the reboot issue, try and change the settings back to Set Automatically
Turn off notifications for all the apps on your device
-
- Tap Settings > Notifications
- Tap an app and turn off Allow Notifications
- Repeat the above step for each and every app. If your iDevice resets while you’re turning off Notification pick up where you left off
- Only after all notifications are off should you update your device
- After updating, tap Settings > Notifications and turn Allow Notifications on again for each app
Turn Airplane mode ON, then wait 20 seconds, and toggle it back Off
- Airplane mode temporarily turns off your iPhone’s or iPad’s cellular capabilities
Try Resetting All Settings on your device
- Tap on Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
- This resets to default everything in Settings, including notifications, alerts, brightness, and clock settings like wake up alarms
- Resetting all settings also reverts all your personalized and customized features like wallpapers and accessibility settings back to factory defaults
- Performing this action does not impact any of your personal device data, including photos, texts, documents, and other files
- You need to reconfigure these settings once your iPhone or iDevice restarts
Disable Background Refresh
- Tap on Settings > General > Background App Refresh and switch it to off
Check for any battery issues
Sometimes your iDevice gets caught in the reboot loop due to battery issues.
Apple offers a battery health feature for iPhones only (at the time of this writing), that allows users to check their iPhone’s battery health.
- Access this feature by going to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and tap it
- There you find both Maximum Capacity, Peak Performance Capability, and Optimized Battery Charging
- Take a look at both these measures of your iPhone’s battery health
If Peak Performance Capability shows anything other than normal, read the message listed below Peak Performance Capability to learn more about what the battery health check discovered on your particular device.
You may learn that your device has turned on performance management, that your iOS is unable to determine battery health, or that your battery’s health is significantly degraded. Apple may advise you to replace the battery or seek out additional assistance via Apple Support.

I have a school iPad 6th generation stuck in a boot loop (it keep appearing the Apple logo and off and Apple logo and off) but when I force restarted it, it keeps going on to the loop. When I hold the home button and the sleep button for a very long time, it completely shut down, but when I try to turn it back on, it still in the loop and I cannot do anything to get it out of the loop. It doesn’t let me access anything, just the Apple logo and shut down. What can I do to fix this?

Have you tried leaving it plugged into a wall outlet for a while before trying to turn it on? Seems like it might not have enough power. Also be sure you’re using genuine Apple wall adapters and cables.

Hi,
My iPhone 6s has been stuck in a boot loop since yesterday and I’m trying to fix it either by Updating or Restoring through Finder on my desktop Mac (running Catalina). But when I connect the phone by a lightning cable, my computer does not see the device, list it in Locations, or prompt me with any dialogue boxes about it. There’s nothing wrong with the charging port, USB port, or cable itself. Do you know what I can do to fix this?
Thanks for your help.

Is there any way i can fix that without loosing my data?

After restore to factory settings within Itunes and update software iphone reboot again and again…
I do it several times…
What are my other possibilités.
Thank you, Luka
Elizabeth Jones says
Hi Luka,
You could try DFU mode (Device Firmware Update.) This mode launches iOS/iPadOS from iTunes/Finder rather than your device. It will completely erase your device–so if you must have a backup available to restore any data.
Also, if you think your device sustained any water or liquid damage, do not perform DFU mode–it will likely brick your device.

If you can get to the Settings app, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > AssistiveTouch. Set Home as one of your Custom Actions.
You can ask Siri to open the Settings App for you if you have trouble getting to the app on-screen.

Hi, my iphone 7 restart again and again after updating ios 11.3..
how can i fix it ?
SK says
Hi Hafiz,
Sorry to hear about your iPhone 7 getting caught in the reboot loop! That must feel very frustrating. Do you have access to iTunes on a Mac or Windows PC? The computer doesn’t need to be yours, it can be a friend’s or family members–it just needs the latest version of iTunes. If using a friends/family computer is not an option, contact your local Apple Store or authorized Apple reseller and ask them to use one of their Macs and iTunes for your iPhone 7. Once you have a computer with iTunes, backup your device to iCloud or via iTunes and then do the following:
Open iTunes
Connect your iPhone 7 to your computer using the USB cable that it came with. Your device appears as an icon in the upper-left corner
Click that icon
Open the Summary tab and then click Check for Update. After you click Download and Update, the download continues even if your device restarts
Wait for the update to complete
If you’re still unable to update or those reboot issues remain even after the update, contact Apple Support
We hope the problem is sorted out after these steps.

Hi, for me the best way to fix this issue was a repair tool called Joyoshare UltFix. I think it will help solve your issue which sounds like the same problem I had. Plus, it fixed my problem with no data loss!
Of course, the other tools mentioned above by different readers can probably do the same thing.
Pick and choose which one you want to try–and let us know if they work. Good luck!

Don’t know how disgusting and useless Iphone updates are where the updates should give more stability to the phone instead of crashing it. As my previous posts my first Iphone5s crashed because of 11.2 as regardless how many different computers, updated Itunes software , updated windows I tried but my Ihone 5s never worked and its still sitting on my desk absolutely USELESS! Now,
I bought a almost new Iphone 5s a week ago and it has 11.2.5 on it and working absolutely great without having any little bitty issue. Now, Apple again announced a new patch 11.2.6 and now my phone which never been opened or any part changed acting so weird.
1- When call is coming I can’t swipe the arrow to receive the call.
Solution: let the call ring when ends. Close with Power button and re-open and I can call back or can receive a call.
2- Apps open automatically
3- Assertive touch button jumping all over the screen.
I really don’t know what to do can’t go back to old version as this is a new phone and has no Backup.
I simply can’t believe this great apple is creating that much problem with I guess so many users as updated with 11.2.6.
I wish, I can talk to someone higher in Apple and request him/her dont release any updates if it is creating that much problem. It’s a great phone let it be staying great.
At the end very very disappointed with Apple updates. I hope they will fix this issue and new update will resolve the issue not creating more.

Thank you other friends as I read all reviews.

I came across this issue yesterday. I woke up to a phone that had been constantly restarting and was over heating. I immediately contacted Apple Support, and they told me that I should take it into an Apple store and let the “Geniuses” check it out.
Little did I know that these “Geniuses” didn’t know the solution either, they tried reinstalling iOS by connecting my phone to their Macbooks but that didn’t work because my phone would just restart while it was reinstalling. As a result, they turn their faces to me and they said “As we don’t know what the issue is, the best thing we can offer you is a unit replacement, which is 300 pounds”. I couldn’t stop laughing, these jokers don’t even know what is wrong with their own product and then expect me to pay so much more money for it.
So I went back home, and I tried reinstalling the iOS with iTunes myself, and it worked. Miraculously, it reinstalled successfully. I lost all my data and contacts but at least the phone works, right? I turned off notifications for most of the Apple apps that I never use, and turned the date back to 13th Feb 2017.
TL;DR: Apple Support is a joke, you can try going in yourself as your support members will be different from mine. This is definitely the last time I am ever going to buy an Apple product.

I have been reading numerous articles on this subject on the whole internet. There seems no one solution but I read also one article which mentioned removing the SIM Card. As I had to use a phone I took out the SIMcard and installed it on the other phone. Indeed after a few hours the iPhone 11Max without simcard which was in Bootloop was suddenly out of the boot loop. If you have the problem, just give it a try.

i m facing this issue right now. Ended up setting the date to 28th November, 2017 and disabled all notifications and even set the battery to low, so that the background refreshing stopped and thankfully the black screen and repeat password problem stopped.
But i have been facing the problem of white squares on screen of my iphone 5s for a long time. As a result of these peculiar white squares, i m unable to download the patch up software that apple released in response to the black screen-n-repeat password bug. Please help.
SK says
Hi Jaysri,
Sorry about all those problems! First, it’s best to update to iOS 11.2 using iTunes–do you have access to a computer with iTunes. It does not have to be your computer–any computer with iTunes installed should do the trick.
Now to those white squares. These indicate problems with your screen, the LCD video cable that connects to your screen, or the metal retaining plate that holds down these connectors. Repairing any of these requires opening up your iPhone and fixing the hardware. These white squares are not a software problem so they need inspection and repair or replacement.
If you feel comfortable, there are lots of online tutorials on how to repair/replace these parts. If uncomfortable, take your iPhone into a service provider and show them your exact issue–they’ve probably seen it before and know how to repair it.

I have an iPhone 6S Plus, I noticed in the middle of the night my phone making that noise when you plug it in about every 2mins, I just thought it was my charger so I unplugged it and went back to bed. Got my phone when I woke up and lets just say it was not my charger. About every 60-70 secs my phone restarts, but its not a hard restart (if I turned it off and on), Because when you restart the device your self it makes you enter your password before you can use fingerprint, this does not make you do that. It only restarts for about 5-10 secs. I can not keep the phone on long enough to do an update to 11.2. I have tired all the other options.
Any thing else I can try? Thanks for the help!
Elizabeth says
Hi Nick,
Yeah, the issue you describe is, unfortunately, a common complaint we’re hearing from our readers and you bet Apple’s hearing from its customers. We suggest trying to update via iTunes, if possible.
Currently, this is all the info we have from Apple:
If your device with iOS 11 unexpectedly restarts repeatedly on or after December 2, 2017, learn what to do.
Try to update your device to iOS 11.2. After you tap Download and Install, the download will continue even if your device restarts. Wait for the update to complete.
If you can’t update, turn off notifications for all the apps on your device, then update your device to iOS 11.2:
Tap Settings > Notifications.
Tap an app, then turn off Allow Notifications. Repeat this step for each app.
Update your device to iOS 11.2.
After updating, tap Settings > Notifications and turn Allow Notifications on again for each app.
Or try to update your device using iTunes. Follow these steps:
Open iTunes. Make sure that you have the latest version.
Connect your device to your computer using the USB cable that it came with. Your connected device appears as an icon in the upper-left corner of the iTunes window. Learn what to do if you don’t see the icon.
Click the device icon.
In the Summary tab, click Check for Update. After you click Download and Update, the download will continue even if your device restarts. Wait for the update to complete.
If you’re unable to update or still have issues after the update, contact Apple Support.
Lenie says
I tried everything that you suggested, but it didn’t work. I’m currently using iPhone 6s plus but I haven’t updated my iOS to iOS 11.2. But still, it keeps restarting/rebooting.
Can someone help me with this?
Thank you!
Elizabeth says
Hi Lenie,
A quick workaround though is to set the date to manual and anytime before DEC 2nd, 2017. Go to Settings > General > Date&Time and set it manually to a date BEFORE 12/2/2017
Then try the following. If after repeated attempts, you can’t get it to work, call Apple.
To turn off notifications for all the apps on your device
Tap Settings > Notifications
Tap an app and turn off Allow Notifications
Repeat the above step for each and every app. If your iDevice resets while you’re turning off Notification pick up where you left off
Only after all notifications are off should you update your device to iOS 11.2.
After updating, tap Settings > Notifications and turn Allow Notifications on again for each app
Another option to try if you’re not able to turn Notifications off or are experiencing problems is to turn on Do Not Disturb and then try to update to iOS 11.2. Go to Settings > Do Not Disturb.

Apple does not issuE “a whole new IOS” every year. They rename it and add a year’s worth of features. Marketing is necessary for every company’s survival. If you do not want the upgrade, then keep the old version, but I praise Apple for continuing to enhance their product. Microsoft Windows XP was one of the most popular operating systems and people refused to upgrade to Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 because they liked the OS. Microsoft finally dropped support to force people to move on.
Mike says
I think Apple needs to put an end to the entirely marketing-driven practice of releasing a completely new version of iOS every year. There simply isn’t time to iron out all of the new bugs before a brand new version comes out and we start all over again. I would prefer to have a stable, working OS than to be constantly pushed into new versions that are frankly just broken.
This latest reset loop bug is just embarrassing for a company of Apple’s (now only alleged) caliber. They’re really going downhill fast. Time to refocus on the fundamentals. Steve Jobs would have absolutely slaughtered people if this kind of nonsense kept happening.

Hi Mike,
You have some very valid points here. Agree that releasing a new iOS every year is cumbersome, for both users and developers. Apple would definitely be going against the grain–but that’s never stopped them in the past, so why now?
Thanks for sharing your input!
